Briefly, through bulk licensing I have my choice of these two
programs.

Which one is best in terms of protection and resource load?

Thanks.

If this is a company, I suggest McAfee Enterprise v8.5i

For a personal laptop. Does it make a difference?

No. Desktop or notebook... to the software, they are the same.

I would highly recommend AVG free. I've used it for years, it's highly rated in comparison tests. No noticeable resource impact, nor has it ever given me any problems or interference. Definitions are updated pretty much daily so you know you have the latest protection. Just Google it for a download link.
