I regularly remove Norton (something) several times per week in my own computer business.
On every new PC that I set up for a customer, Norton or McAfee are summarily removed.
AVG 7.5 FREE is the logical replacement.
ANTI-VIRUS PROTECTION:
World famous AVG FREE will keep your computer free of viruses,
trojans, dialers, etc.
By default, it updates and scans for viruses on a daily basis.
AVG 7.5 FREE, can be downloaded from:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5
Scroll down the page to "FREE Downloads" and then click on:
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5
That takes you to the next page where you can select:
avg75free_485a1117.exe (or the currently posted version)
Save the file to your desktop and run the install from there.
If you have an older version of AVG free already installed,
use the 'Repair Install' option when installing v. 7.5.
Immediately get updates. More than one may be required.
Everything you need to know about removing Norton from your PC is in my signature line. Well, almost!
However.......I always use the Windows ADD/Remove applet first.
Then I use the "Norton Removal Tool" to cleanup what's left over.
Finally I open Windows Explorer and make sure there are no Norton or Symantec folders left over. If there are, I delete them.
As a part of my retirement, I no longer build PC's for people in my area (Central Florida). I do, however, install many new PC's that people buy at the local retail stores, like Circuit City. I tell them to NOT even unbox the new PC. Let me unbox it and check for damage, then go through the setup procedure correctly, to make sure everything is done right.
As part of the setup procedure, I do run the new and revised "Decrapifier" and I take out all the trials, demos, and all the WildTangent (spyware) games.
I also install AdAware, Spybot S&D and AVG 7.5 FREE.
A custom HOSTS file, like the one from Mike Burgess, will go a long ways toward keeping your computer safe from bad web sites.
The newest version of the "Decrapifier" also removes the Norton an McAfee trials.
Like removing a virus (which is usually easier) removing Norton can leave parts of windows, like your internet connection, damaged as a result.
The faster you can get Norton off of a new PC, the less likelihood of the removal causing any serious problems.
I'm glad to see the link to the WinSockFix.
I don't need that very often, but when I need it....I NEED IT!
Thank you "Rick" for that great post.
