I just got done reading the topic thread that says avoid all free
anti-virus programs, but I'm still going to ask: "What's the best free
anti-virus program?" And I'm talking one that does the best job with
catching viruses, worms, trojans, etc.
I see this question asked a lot in here, but the responses always seem
to degenerate into petty arguments between the respondents. |

Find an old Norton Anti-Virus (NAV) 2002 CD. Or Norton System Works
2002.
The one-year subscription licence can be renewed by simply
re-installing the program (that's why I consider it to be free). And
it updates itself over the net no problem.
That's the last version of NAV before it became a real slow, huge
resource hog. |

The best anti-virus is Linux or Macintosh. Screw Windows and it's many
bugs, just get a better OS. |

NO !
The *best* anti virus is the person !
Any OS connected to the Internet used by someone who doesn't practice Safe Hex is at risk.

Does that include XP - gold or XP - SP1?
Sorry - no amount of "safe hex" could make those systems more secure.
Sometimes the OS ->is<- the problem. The smart-ass who said to use
Linux or Mac was right - if we're talking about XP.
If we're talking Windows vs Mac, then put Win-98 up against Mac. XP
was still-born for the first 2.5 years of it's life. |

Bar far the best is AVS:
http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp
Just don't opt for the toolbar during installation

Art,
Are you using a PFW? I have seen reports of conflicts with some
versions of some PFWs with AVS.

Hi
And I'll say again here, you would be naive to think that ONE AV scanner is the solution. You need at least 2 and both should have an "on acess" scan available.
Also, get 2 anti-Spyware, SpywareBlaster (same site as Spybot) and an AT as well.
Some useful links:
AntiVirus = AVG: HERE
Spyware = Ewido: HERE
Spyware = SpybotS&D & SpywareBlaster: HERE (ignore the donation part)
Firewall = Sygate: HERE.
AntiTrojan = ASquared: HERE |

It seems I have too, in particular Sygate. But I've tried
running Sygate and experienced no problems.
