For starters my avg free won't update as it can't connect to the server. I went to do the update manually and I got a "cannot connect to the server error page" when trying to get to avg.com. I am unable to connect using IE, firefox and safari. When i run an avg scan i get the following error message: avgwdsvc.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. I kept hitting links from google and eventually I was able to run a limited avast cleaner from a website but it found no viruses. The following is its report::

Files scanning started...
C:\Documents and Settings\Clint Asher\Local Settings\Temp\Perflib_Perfdata_3e8.dat... file could not be scanned!
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataStore.edb... file could not be scanned!
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs\edb.log... file could not be scanned!
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs\tmp.edb... file could not be scanned!
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log... file could not be scanned!
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\tmp.edb... file could not be scanned!
No virus body found.
Files scanning finished (191303 files, 0 infected, 2627.3s).
Drives scanned: C: I: J: K: L:

I cannot get to avast.com for follow up either. In fact I can't get to any virus protection websites. Also as a side note, when i click on links from google i sometimes go to weird places having nothing to do with the link. Finally I get random pop up from some alleged virus removal software that I didn't catch the name of. The following is the message I get when trying to access any page that may help me as discussed above:

Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at housecall.trendmicro.com.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

I am having the very same problem. It seemed to have just started a couple of days ago. First thing I noticed was AVG being unable to connect for updates then tonight noticed the strange redirections from Google when I searched and tried to access specific websites and also cannot access any anti-virus websites or any Microsoft knowledge base links. I tried to perform a system restore and I get as far as being able to select the restore point, but when I get to the confirmation page and click 'next', nothing happens.

I hope someone will have some information to help soon. I run my business from my computer and this is most distressing. Am currently backing up all my information preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.

I did find someone having a similar problem in another forum. Here is the link in case it might help. I'm trying the "combo fix" suggestion right now. If it works, I'll post back and let you know.
Possible help

I just finished running the "combo fix" as discussed in this forum and it worked. I am now able to update my AVG and also access anti-virus websites and also I can now run Spybot (which I couldn't before). So this fix is worth a try. I hope it works as well for you as it did for me. I'm starting to breathe better again now. Smile

I started to have the exact same issue as above within the last few days. On top of the aforementioned issues, I was also unable to even do a system restore.

After doing some searching and eventually stumbling across this website, I was able to resolve this issue's using the Combofix and then scanning using Spybot. All seems well for now.

Like the previous posters, I was also unable to update from the AVG/Spybot websites and kept getting weird re-directs when I would click on links from Google.

I'm not a techie kind of guy and computers pretty much dumbfound me, but somehow I was able to make it all work in the end.

Thanks for the assistance in resolving my issues!

had to do a few seaches to get here but im glad to see im not the only one with this issue, this is a clients computer im working on and ive totaly cleaned the system, and nothing has resolved the connection/website issue. here are the steps i took:

i removed the drive and scaned it using another system and removed all infected files.

i booted it again and used a combination of procexp killbox, and hijackthis

rinsed and repeated

i ensured that absolutly no startup items existed, all non-ms services are disabled, no ie addons are enabled or running, no entrys in the hosts file aside from localhost, disabled windows firewall

then i used a utility called WinsockxpFix and LSPfix to reset LSP/Winsock

still the same symptoms, but then i ran ComboFix.exe and the problem went away... wow... thats going in my tool box
