Per Pete:
>I have a chance to buy this pretty cheaply, but I've heard it's a resource
>hog. Anyone have any experience with it??

Had it for about 2 years and my experience was negative.

Dropped it, moved to Avast!, and never looked back.

Don't know enough to critique it on technical grounds, but I found the UI tb
unacceptable when stuff started to happen: interruptive warnings - try getting
some work done when some outside entity is bumping up against it's FireWall 2-3
times/second...)

Also found that their user support was useless: mostly inane boilerplate in the
email responses at first, and then no response at all later on.

There's more... but, like I said, I've move on...

WAIT!
Before you make any drastic or stupid moves, it does NOT take up 70MB.
The process that run with IS, the time you iniciate Windows, occupies
almost 70 MB, but then it goes down considerably after loading, which
takes about 5 minutes only. The proccesses don't use 25 MB each, so
here I'm going to write the process it uses and the amount each one use
in the memory:

pccguide.exe 2820 KB

pcCtlCom.exe 8640 KB

PcScnSrv.exe 11740 KB

Tmntsrv.exe 752 KB

TmPfw.exe 4752 KB

TmProxy.exe 4468 KB

----------- --------

6 processes 33172 KB

TMIS2007 is one of the best suites ever.

Task manager says it occupies around 70Mb of RAM, if that helps. I have no
idea what the other main players occupy. My machine runs well with 500Mb
onboard. I guess it depends on what else you plan to do at the same time.

70MB! Why yes, I'd consider that bloat.
A friend has spoken highly of NOD32. Maybe I'll look into that.
Thanks.

Glad I didn't buy it!
I'm considering NOD32, but it seems more expensive.

I recently upgraded from PC-cillin IS 2006 to 2007 and straight away my PC
slowed.
The culprit is the spyware process that scans everything you do on your PC.
It is called PcScnSrv.exe.
Even when opening MS Word this process hogs over 98% of the CPU. Opening
html documents etc etc etc.
I contacted Trend Micro and they said it was probably a bad file download
and they suggested that I install the latest build 1429 (I had 1329). This
did not help. So I now suspend the process and don't have the problem.
Probably not a good idea but TM haven't answered my request to explain
exactly what the PcScnSrv.exe process does and what vulnerabilities I have
by suspending the process.

I have had Pc-cillin for many years and have been very happy with it up to
now. It will be great once TM can solve this annoying problem. A search of
the internet shows a lot of other disgruntled customers because of this
issue.

PC-Cillin 2007 took me straight back to the dial-up days.
Admittedly, my computer is about four years old, but PC-Cillin 2006
worked fine. After "up"grading to 2007, my computer took forever to
re-boot, and every icon I clicked on took forever to load. Then,
every web link I clicked on took forever to appear. When I checked
the bandwidth of my Cox Cable connection at http://test.lvcm.com/ , it
showed that everything was fine with my Internet connection.

Luckily, when I upgraded to PC-Cillin 2006, I also ordered it
on CD. I uninstalled 2007. The uninstall went fine, if you discount
the fact that it left a bunch of files on my hard drive, a bunch of
entries on my Start menu, and a bunch of stuff in my Windows Registry.
After cleaning all the junk up manually and re-booting, I popped the
CD in, and did a fresh install of PC-Cillin 2006.

The result of all of the above is that I GOT MY COMPUTER BACK!
I am thankful that everything worked out OK in the LONG run. But,
since I have an older computer, even if they fix 2007's problems, I
won't be "up"grading again.

Ditto. I'm trying to get some Live Chat support from TM, so far after a
couple of hours no response. Tempus fugit and sic transit...

I've temporarily Paused the PcScnSrv service via ProcessExplorer. This
is probably not a good solution since I am probably at risk of
infection. Also, some processes leave resources locked when paused.

Ive had exactly the same problem as reported above. I am getting excruciatingly slow web pages, e-mail (OE) slower than before and 100% CPU utilisation for long periods of time. I have used PC-Cillin for the last 2 years (v13 & 14) & have upgraded to 2007. Now EVERYTHING is slow. I have contacted Trend by e-mail & they have advised that I revert from IE7 (my browser is BT Yahoo which runs on IE7) and revert to IE6. I am loath to do this as IE7 works fine for me.

A question - having paid for 2007 for 2 years if I uninstall & go back to 2006 - will the 2 year licence allow me to keep 2006 running for next 2 years and still download latest patterns? I can then wait until Trend have sorted out issues with 2007 & update at a later stage.

Same problems here too... I have been using Pc-Cillin for the past 10 years and was always very happy with it. I had just renewed and upgraded to the 2006 version this past august and when they offered free upgrade to 2007 last week, I took it! Results: 100% of CPU usage with the PcScnSrv.exe only and it reoccurs every 5 min. (I tested it through the task manager for a full 30 minutes). I de-activated Ad-Aware and Ad-Watch in case they came in conflict: no change. With Pc-Cillin 2007, I kept only the anti-virus and the firewall activated, the rest is de-activated because I don't need them. Does'nt make a bit of difference.
Moreover, Pc-Cillin 2007 's firewall keeps Port 135 wide open unless you add a restriction to it. Then it opens 1025, so had to shut that one too! Thanks GRC for the testing!
I used their chat help, and got a pretty quick answer. They told me to go d/l a newer build which I did. I did a full uninstall first. Then cleaned up all the left overs with Ccleaner, then another full clean-up with RegMechanic. Installed the new d/l fresh. Result: ABSOLUTE SAME PROBLEM !

So, not a happy camper today. And since I'm not the only one as I see here... and there does'nt seem to be any solution for now, I will uninstall the 2007 and go back to the 2006 which was doing just great! I too, want my computer back!!!

And by the way, I do use IE 6 (so Nige... this won't help...).

My sympathy to us all... and better luck in the near future!!!

I also have these issues. I've also tried the download link with
no change. They even told me it was Norton System works.
I didn't have Norton Antivirus installed but to humor them I
removed all of Norton. No change. Now I will say I do think there
is a conflict somewhere. I also installed this on a new desktop and
no problems. So there must be something. Only other thing I can
think of is I tried the MS Windows Defender for a while I did go thru the deinstall but I wonder if something is hanging around.
Also... there are times when the memory usage of PcScnSrv drops
to 32meg from 72 meg but I have not figured out a pattern
for that.

I had issues, too. 2006 was a bit of a pain on dial-up, but doable. 2007 is another whole can of worms. I've been trying to complain to TrendMicro, but they have made some assumptions that totally whizzed me off!. 1. I couldn't submit a page to support using FF. I had to use Opera and have it claim it was IE. 2. Apparently if you don't use OE or Express you can't turn off services- I had everything unchecked and it still loaded the spam & phish. (It doesn't do Yahoo webmail, and I use mailwasher for the others). So I uninstalled it. Regardless of who the vendor is - they all need to list all the specs for running the program before installation. Some of us have specialized computers. I have 2 - the laptop is for photography and astronomy - so only those programs needed are installed. No office suite of any kind. I also have a desktop that is for machine embroidery software. Also no office suite. So I'd like to know what software covers and does before purchase and installation. I found some of the answers in the help file for 2007 that is installed, but not on the website.

PostPosted: Wed Jan 03, 2007 1:53 pm    Post subject: Trend Micro instructions for those that have used Spybot [Login to view extended thread Info.]

For those who have or have used in the past Spybot Search and Destroy, have they tried the instructions posted on the Trend Micro site?
Shocked

Problem:

After installing PC-cillin Internet Security 2007, my computer started to run slowly. It also takes a long time to open different programs. When I check the Processes tab of the Windows Task Manager, I see PcScnSrv.exe with a very high CPU usage. What should I do?

Solution:

You may experience this issue if you have previously installed the Spybot Search and Destroy program on your computer.

Spybot may have made some changes to your computer that conflicts with the spyware monitor of PC-cillin Internet Security. It also increased the size of the spyware exception list considerably, causing your computer to slow down whenever PC-cillin Internet Security is active.

To get your computer back to its normal speed, do the following:

Important: We recommend that you print out this document before proceeding as you will be asked to restart your computer during the procedure.

1.Open the Spybot Search and Destroy program by clicking Start > Programs or All Programs > Spybot – Search & Destroy > Spybot – Search & Destroy.

Note: If you have already uninstalled Spybot from your computer, you need to install it again before proceeding.

2.Click Immunize on the left menu.

3.Click Undo. A message appears saying "All bad products are now allowed again".

4.Close the Spybot window and any other open programs.

5.Double-click My Computer on your Desktop.

6.Double-click Local Disk.

7.Go to the C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security 2007 folder.

8.Delete the usrwl.dat file.

9.Restart your computer.

If your computer still runs slowly, contact Trend Micro Consumer Support.
