I have had McAfee Security Center and Virus Scan 10 for several months. My
OS is Win XP Home edition.. My computer was unacceptably slowed by the
McAfee software from day one. Changing several settings under "services"
helped, but the frequent automatic updating downloads, sweeps, and
installations were still detrimental to computer speed.
A few days ago Virus Scan appeared to stop working. I got an error message
that the version installed is incompatible with my OS, and advising to
uninstall, reboot, and reinstall. I did this, which required a new download
from McAfee. I still get the same incompatibility notice, but the software
appears to work. Today it downloaded updates and ran an automatic scan that
claimed to have detected and removed 28 items.
I went to the McAfee tech support website, installed and ran their Virtual
Technician, and was told thereby that there is no problem! Attempting to
open Security Center however still gives me the incompatibility notice.
Getting free support service from McAfee is almost impossible!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

Get rid of McAfee and get a reliable virus scanner.
McAfee is one of the world leaders of spam creation and distribution. |

Hi Howard,
What Service pack level of Windows XP Home Edition are you running?
How much memory is installed? What is the CPU Processor Speed?
What McAfee Software Program Versions are installed?

My advice is get rid of Mcafee and install a decent Anti-Virus package.
I use Avast, which is free for home use. |
