I have been putting up with this for months now, but it is just getting
intolerable.
The automatic update downloads and installations render my computer almost
unusable for the 10 minutes or so they take after bootup. This happens
almost daily. Every so often a scan begins to run automatically, and I
always have to cancel it due to how badly it slows everything else while in
progress. And a scan takes a LONG time!
I have Win XP home edition.
Can anything be done through the settings that will increase speed without
significantly harming my protection?
I'm told that AVG anti-virus doesn't slow a computer down significantly and
is just as good as McAfee. Correct?
Thanks for any advice. |

I do PC repair and Virus removal for a living ( 7th year now )
I get the same complaint from my customers all the time, and what I do for
them is this,
remove McAfee, install AVG with firewall (it's cheap enough), or AVG free
and Zone Alarm free from zone labs.
and without exception, I see a speed increase in every machine. (over the
McAfee and Norton).
I've been doing that for my customers for about three years now, and I have
not heard one complaint
Good luck

Thank you so much for this information!
Would the free AVG plus my existing Windows firewall be sufficient? |

That's all I use (with broadband router), and all tests like Shields Up
show I'm quite secure.

Windows firewall has come a long way so probably, but I personally like Zone
Alarm
