Hey, not sure if this is the place to post (I'm brand-spanking-new to the forums, so hello by the way!), but I've got a real problem and I can't seem to find an answer to it anywhere:

I'm running Windows XP, on a cable connection, and I'm using Avast! Antivirus along with ZoneAlarm (free) Firewall. Whenever I install Avast! on my system, somewhere along the line, I get disconnected (It's kind of a random disconnection; happens every so often). Should mention that it also happens if/when I use the Windows Firewall instead of Z.A, and I've heard of the conflicts with using ZA and Avast! together, but I don't think that's the problem.

If anyone has any experience with the problem, and could help me ASAP, it'd be wonderful.

Welcome to Lockergnome.

Yep, it might be a conflict between them. Uninstall Avast and give AVG a try. See if it still has problems after you do that. If not, then that's the problem.

Otherwise, if you like Avast, then you will have to switch to another firewall...your decision. I find ZoneAlarm to be more of the friendlier ones to use.

I switched to Antivir for the moment, but I really prefer Avast over anything else.

Would you have any other suggestions for other firewalls I could use?

There is an incompatibility with Avast's 4.6 Web Shield and Zone Alarm's privacy features (ad blocking etc).
It causes certain pages to load incorrectly or not at all.

After having massive problems the newer versions of Zone Alarm (not related to the Avast Web Shield) I switched to Sygate. As far as I know Sygate doesn't have a problem with the Web Shield.

Hi Lone

I used to use ZA, AVG and Avast and found that niether AVG or ZA liked Avast.

Since switching to Sygate, I am caused a whole bunch less problems than when I used ZA (especially when using networking), and Avast I have since got rid of. (It didn't seem to find the easy ones??)

Do as Zeus says and swap to Sygate m8.

Currently I am using the 30 day free trial from avast antivitrus ver 4.8-1335 along with ZA 8.0.298, there is no compatibility issue between the two.

The problem with avast 30 day trial is they autoshutdown your connection from within their own softare by blocking your ability to connect to the internet through the network shield or the webshield when it gets close to either purchasing the software or renewal.

How do I know this, because as of May 12 2009 at 6:15pm cst, I was playing an online game when my conenction just dropped. Im running off a wireless router an a cable modem. So lets start with basics network testing

begin by opening your internet connection called local area connection click on the support tab click repair. If that didnt get u back up an running then shutoff firewall an antivirus an try to repair again, if that still doesnt get u up an runnin then you have a real issue with avast. Because after I did all that I still could not connect.

My next network fix was hardware, unplug cable modem for 10 seconds replug an try to connect, if that didnt work then reset your hardwired router by pressing the reset button, if no reset button simply unplug it an plug it back in after waiting 10 seconds NOTE: do not reset your wireless unless u want to start all over from ground zero by resetting the encryption keys an other stuff, so simply unplug ur wireless plug it back in.

After doing all of that still no connection. Then I realized that avast even though it was turned off had somehow changed several settings all by itself (an was still running in background hidden). I checked the webshieled first an found the setting had gone from normal to customize. I then checked network shield an found the setting had gone from normal to customize. returning the network shield back to normal all of a sudden everything began working again. I am running winXP Pro with SP3. I do not use the XP firewall because it is pretty much useless. You can find out for yourself by going an testing your firewalls at grc.com. If you still want to run Avast then simply turn off ZA install Avast then turn ZA back an on an it should prompt u for a new program to add.

But after noting that Avast is using some sort of hidden program to cut u off from the internet I wouldnt even think to use that software until a professional software programmer looked more deeply into it.
