| This is not a problem that is interfering with use of my computer, but I am interested in comments, especially from anyone using Norton Internet Security 2007. While clearing some files from my C drive in preparation of a full backup, I noticed a Symantec folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Shared. Amazingly, this folder contains 724,519 files in 103,438 folders and is using almost 3 GB. of hard disk storage space. Most of the folders seem to be in the QBackup folder which contains tens of thousands of subfolders. The folder is so large that it took an hour and a half for Windows to give me Properties on that folder (on a computer with a 2.80 GHz processor and 1 GB memory). I sent a message to Symantec Tech Support and received a reply that “I understand from your message that you are concerned by the size of QBackup folder present in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data. Note this is not a Symantec folder and you can find Symantec files and folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec.” (???? Isn’t that what I said?) Anyway, Symantec suggested the following (unedited from the reply): “Also note that the QBackup file can be of other programs installed on your computer to know more about the file you need to contact your System vendor or Microsoft. In order to resolve the issue, I suggest that you contact Microsoft Technical Support.” I had already checked with Microsoft before contacting Symantec and they told me this was a Symantec folder, which is obviously the case since the Symantec folder contains LiveUpdate, etc. So, I’m wondering if anyone out there is using Norton Internet Security 2007. If so, take a look in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Shared, see if there’s a QBackup folder, and how many folders/files it contains. Again, this is not a problem interfering with use of the computer. I’m simply PO’d that there are three-quarter of a million, possibly (likely) unnecessary files on my drive, and I’m not really impressed with the rather vague, and not very well-worded, “solution” from Symantec. Thanks.

| I did write back to Symantec to point out that it appeared they didn’t understand the situation since the folder they said didn’t exist and was not a Symantec folder actually did exist. They e-mailed back, apologized, and gave me instructions to get rid of the files which basically involved temporarily turning off product protection before trying to access that folder, then deleting the contents of the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Shared folder and restarting the computer, then re-enabling protection and running LiveUpdate. I did that, and gratefully the 725,000 files were gone. I now have the same number as you, 17.2 MB, which apparently is the number that should be there. |
