Archived from groups: alt>comp>virus (more info?)

I have window XP computer. When I boot my computer i received the
message "Trend ChipAwayVirus has detected a boot virus on your hard
disk". I had a lot of issues with this PC so I decided to reformat
\reinstall Windows XP.

I changed the boot order CDRom to be first under Bios, inserted win xp
installtion cd and restarted, I got the same error "Trend
ChipAwayVirus has detected a boot virus on your hard disk".

Then I disabled ChipAway Virus protection under Bios. Restarted, it
booted without error skipping the win xp installation wizard and
loaded windows. Is there anything I am missing here?
This is my first time installing windows. I just want to resintall
windows.

Am I better off removing the virus, if so how, or reinstalling
windows?

Thanks

The "ChipAway Virus protection" is very most likley false.

This item found by searching on Google with this phrase "ChipAway Virus
protection under Bios" . There were 1590 responses!

The ChipAway virus is not a virus at all. In fact, it is a poorly
chosen name for a good idea. Many PCs have an advanced BIOS feature
that, when activated, prevents any writes to the MBR through BIOS disk
routines. If active, this feature can cause problems if you install non-
DOS operating systems (like OS/2, Windows 95 or Windows NT), as their
installation routines typically need to write to the MBR, but for
general purpose computers, it is a good idea to turn on these options,
if they exist.

Unfortunately, one of the earliest and most widely available
implementations of this idea prints a message on screen at each system
startup to the effect "ChipAwayVirus installed". This is supposed to
calm the owner's nerves, making them confident that their BIOS antivirus
system is working for them. For fairly obvious reasons, it tends to
have the opposite effect!

I hope this helps

I'm an old hand at installing Windows XP - but I do have a full Retail
version. Do you? If so, it is really easy and far simpler than trying to
'clean' a machine IMO!

Good luck!

Thanks for your input. Could you explain how I can repartition,
reformat, and write the correct MBR to the drive? I forgot to mention
about my floppy drive. When I insert floppy disk and browse for a
file, I get "Please insert a disk into Drive A" error. Is this somehow
related to Chipaway error? How can repair the floppy drive.

Thanks again.

There is probably no virus. Ignore the fact that the word
'virus' was mentioned. Leave the ChipAway disabled. I can't
imagine why it would suddenly start freaking out. Before you
reinstall XP you could repartition, reformat, and write the
correct MBR to the drive.

Chances are either the floppy is bad or the floppy drive. It has nothing to do with
Chipaway.

Go back into the BIOS setup and make sure the CD is still first. If not,
change the sequence and save the new settings.

Try another bootable CD or try booting from the Windows XP CD
on a known good computer.

If there is nothing worth saving on the hard drive, delete the
existing partitions and create a new one. Then format the new
partition and reinstall Windows.

Thanks again.

To repartition etc. use a utility like Partition Commander. New Floppy
drives cost about $15, so that's easy.
CD-ROM should be first in boot order anyway.
Best of luck.
