I use Free Avira and so do my clients and several friends, but this week
two of them have told me that they have been asked by Avira to upgrade and
then asked for $39 . This has surpised us all ; and I would like to say
that if true, it is a worrying trend. I have no complaints about the
program, but it should not be a way of frightening unsophisticated users
into upgrading to the paid version.

I have clients who have had the same experience -- the Classic version
license has expired and cannot be renewed by replacing the license key
with a freshly downloaded one by thoroughly uninstalling (with Rev
Uninstaller) and re-installing AntiVir. I've had to switch to Avast in
those cases, or upgrade the client to Premium (which is still
excellent value). I, too, would be pleased to learn how to solve this
problem.

In those instructions... for XP Home Edition...
In Safe Mode...
"# Go to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic
\avnotify.exe
# Right-click avnotify.exe-> properties-> security-> advanced"
I have run across two computers now with XP Home that do not have a
security tab in the properties dialog in Safe Mode.
Also there doesn't seem to be any other administrative fixes that I can
find either in Safe or Normal mode. Anyone else ever run in to this?

Did you try this part...

..: Disable the splash screen :.

1. Open regedit and navigate to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
2. In the right pane double-click avgnt and add /nosplash at the
end of the path (ex. /min /nosplash). Avira changed /nosplash to /ns
for version 9.

I've had to use it for the reason you mention and I think it worked
(forget).

Yep. I'd already done that part. It's the avnotify nag screen I'm trying to
get rid of. Home Edition requires booting in Safe Mode. In explorer if you
right click an exe file and then click on properties, there should be about
5 tabs, one of which is "security". However in the cases I mentioned the
tab was not there.

I think I have figured out the security tab problem. This XP Home
installation is FAT32. I don't think the security tab is an option unless
the file system is NTFS.
This still doesn't help me figure out how to get rid of the nag screen
though.

One sure way of getting rid of any nag screen you might encounter is simply to purchase the Premium edition Laughing
It's well worth it!!!! Wink

| When I used WindowsXP Home, I could also block the "avnotify" screen in
| my firewall (OnlineArmor Free).

I used SECPOL.MSC on WinXP Pro and restricted access to avnotify.exe
Then I exported the restriction from the Registry into a .REG file.
After I install Avira AntiVir free edition on a PC I just import the .REG file.

Seems to work on all versions of XP (Home, Pro, Media Edition) and may even also work on
Vista.

If you are referring to the nag screen shown at each definition update,
offering to sell the full product, I feel thats a very small inconvenience
(a single mouse click closes it) for what many consider the finest free
antivirus program available. If it's somehting else, I have never
experienced it in 2 years of using the program.
