| I've got an old laptop I mainly use for downloads. It has AVG7 on it but
Grisoft has discontinued updates for that version. The newer version
doesn't run in Win ME. What free AV would be recommended for a Win ME
system? Thanks.

You can repartition the new machine, or add a second HD, and install
Win7 RC on a fresh partition. Make it your default boot OS. Etc.

Hi Kermit,
I too tried Avira, but they abandoned win9x also.
I am using Avast! from Alwil now for the oldies.
The gui is a bit awkward, but it seems to be
a good alternative. Avast! 4.8 free.
Best wishes, zzron
PS: Puppy Linux also a good way to go.
Puppy seems to have all the drivers.
I am struggling to install win98 in old Compaq laptop
but Compaq (HP) doesn't list the video or chipset drivers.
win98 3 days, Puppy, 1/2 hour install. |

I don't think you'll find NAV 2002 on that page. |

No, don't bother with NAV 2000. The intelligent updater won't work with
it. And maybe not even for NAV 2001 either.

And so, unlike Wolf, you're telling me that the NAV2000 disc is good for
nothing regarding Win Me? |

You're welcome. Hope the download is satisfactory.

Wolf, does NAV2002 use up more RAM than does AVAST free home edition? |

Don't know, I haven't used Win 9x since about 2001.
Anyhow, if you haven't already done so, stuff your machine with all the
RAM it will take. Then you won't have to worry about RAM usage. I
presume you have an older machine, so RAM may be hard to find for it.
Back then, I found that doubling the RAM improved Win9x's operation by
more than 100% - mostly, there was much less HD usage for page files.
Good luck.

Norton System Information tells me the following about these two loaded
processes:
nprotect.exe
- file size: 132 kb
- 2.96 mb (total memory usage?)
- 5 threads
- total module size: 2.91 mb
- total allocated memory: 46.6 kb
- total non-shared memory use: 311 kb
navapw32.exe
- file size: 74 kb
- 5.62 mb (total memory usage?)
- 7 threads
- total module size: 5.57 mb
- total allocated memory: 55.5 kb
- total non-shared memory use: 1.02 mb
cctask tells me these NAV modules are in use (no idea how much memory
they use):
apwcmd9x.dll (73 kb)
apwutil.dll (36 kb)
navproxy.dll (70 kb)
numisc.dll (45 kb)
s32krnll.dll (233 kb)
s32util.dll (126 kb)
This is with no obvious file scanning taking place. This is on a
win-98se system.
When I start the Norton SystemWorks 2002 front-end user-interface
(nmain.exe) SI tells me:
nmain.exe
- file size: 534 kb
- 21.7 mb (total memory usage?)
- 6 threads
- total module size: 20.0 mb
- total allocated memory: 1.75 kb
- total non-shared memory use: 9.71 kb
Nmain loads or calls 20 other norton/symantec dll's that I'm not going
to list. Their memory usage is included in the 20.0 mb module
allocation listed above.
Bottom line is that when NAV 2002 is running in the system tray, it's
using almost 10 mb of system memory. When the user interface is
running, it uses an additional 22 mb for a total of about 32 mb. |
