I cannot publish using FP2003 to my godaddy site "ResearchRiders". I know
that FP extensions are enabled and in place because I can publish another
project (BoincInfo) using Visual Studio 2008 and frontpage extensions at the
same location http://stateson.net/BoincInfo

There are two problems

(1) get the error message to the effect that "service.lck" cannot be
accessed and the site cannot be published at
http://stateson.net/ResearchRiders

OK I read various solutions here
http://www.scriptfx.com/frontpage/general/service.lck_errors.htm

they all deal with deleteing the file service.lck

There is a file in ...\mywebs\ResearchRiders\_vti_pvt named service.lck and
it has 0 length. I can delete it just fine. In fact I can delete the
entire _vti_whatevers and they all get re-created. Known that for a while.
However, deleting the service.lck has no effect on publishing to the godaddy
hosting. I still get the error message that something is wrong with
service.lck

(2) Cannot remove my failed attempts. I cannot get rid of any of the
_vti_whatever files on the godaddy hosting. Not just the service.lck, but
any of those hidden directories. I cannot even get rid of my supposidly
empty ResearchRiders directory. I am currently renaming my failed attempts
to rr1, rr2, etc because my ftp program (vista command prompt ftp.exe)
cannot seem to remove them. When I attempt to publish I get the error that
ResearchRiders is already there. I have to rename it as I cannot delete it.
There is probably a way to delete them since FP2003 created them in the
first place one would think. I could always ask the godaddy host support to
delete them for me but I like to fix my own problems.

thanks for looking

solved problem (2) - godaddy's host manage allowed me to set permissions and
to delete files and directories, but I still cannot publish thru FP2003
using FrontPage extensions as services.lck is still a problem. I can
publish using ftp. I wonder if web expression has this problem? How is it
I can publish using VS2008 using extensions, but FP2003 works only with ftp?

Expression Web (not web Expression) will have the same problem publishing as
FrontPage - unless you use version 3 of EW, and use FTP instead of the
FrontPage extensions. FTP publishing in EW v3 is *much* faster than in
FrontPage or EW 1 or 2. Note that using FTP will mean giving up the
extensions for ever - they should be removed from the site to avoid nags
when publishing.

service.lck has to be deleted on Godaddy's server. Publishing with FTP will
corrupt the extensions - if you have published with FTP you may have to
reinstall or repair the extensions.
