I am trying to create an A5 brochure in landscape with 2 columns for text and
spaces to add photos. I don't know how to do the columns or how to put in
photos without upsetting the text.

Any ideas?

Adjust the wrap. It is the dog icon on the toolbar. Experiment with different
wraps.
