dwt vs htm

I started my website page with the intentions it will be my home page. Then
I read some where that if you want the top page banner I created and the left
side (which will be my hyperlinks to other pages and sites) to be fixed for
each page you add, convert the page to a DWT for which I did. So I added a
page using the existing DWT file and the new added page became an htm file
opposed to a dwt. Ok so I thought when I previewed via IE 7 browser, only
the htm page appears.

The only items I have in my editable region of my dwt page is text and a
photo.

Now what?

My follow up question: I have 3 tab folders (I believe) from left to right
and they are:
Web site, IIR.dwt, About Us.htm

When I have the dwt file/page open, I preview in IE 7 browser and everything
above the file/tabs remain the same as if I was previewing it in FP preview.

When I have the htm file/page open and I preview in IE 7 browser, IE opens
up with the IE icon/logo, forward and back buttons, etc. and the web page
look pretty good.

When I click on the web site file/tab, then “navigation” on the bottom,
only text appears saying “to create a Home Page, click New Page on the
toolbar”

Sounds to me my dwt file is not the home page I was hoping for or I don’t
know. What is my next move?

You should not have anything in the editable region of the DWT - you can
have things here, but they will not appear on any pages except when the
DWT is attached to a blank (new) page.
When you attach a DWT to a .htm page, the page stays as a .htm page, but
the fixed items (navigation, banners, copyright notice etc.) in the DWT
are added to it.

Create a new page for your Home Page, then attach the DWT to it.
A DWT is not, and never can be, your home page. It is a template - a
diagram that all other pages in your website are based on. The DWT has
NO content other than that content you want on every page, such as
Navigation and Banners.

Ron, thank you for your help. One last follow up question: When I preview
my idex file via IE 7 browser, then I double click on my hyperlink for the
About Us page, I noticed IE opens up an entire new window top to bottom
opposed to just changing the content in the editable cell portion of my page.
Is there a way to reslove that? The only difference between the Index page
and the About Us is is one cell, the editable cell.

The entire page actually will change but it will look like only the cell
changes.
As for it opening in a new window, look at the properties of the hyperlink
from Index to About and see if it has _blank in it, if it does remove it
(just the _blank part).

Rob, I am a little confused. I right clicked on About Us hyperlink on the
DWT page. Then I choose hyperlink properties from the drop down menu. Edit
hyperlink window opened. In the address bar it has: about20%Us.htm
The file itslf: About Us.htm Thanks Joe

If it does contain target="_blank" remove it so it looks like

Rob, I placed my cursor in the cell for which the hyperlink is located. Then
I click the code for the cell if that even matters what of the total 3 cells
I need to be in. Keep in mind I am using a frame layout. I copied a before
and after code that included the word "target". No where does the coding
contain the word blank:

The following coding has to do with the hyperlink: <td valign="top"><a
href="About%20Us.htm">

Also, when I preview via preview browser w/IE 7, when I click on the About
Us hyperlink, it opens up a another who page within IE 7. Top to bottom.

That is how it works. The only way to only load the new content is to
use Frames - and that is a road you should NOT go down. It is strewn
with problems, both for you (the author) and the people who view your
pages.

Ronx, do you suggest I use the "Banner and contents" page or pick a template

Frames?
Oh, man...really sorry...I gave up on frames 2 years ago, I don't use them
and don't have brain space to think on them either.

frames are evil unless you have a really really compelling reason to use
them.

In the folder list view, right click on About Us.htm, select rename and then rename the file to
about_us.htm or aboutus.htm this will remove the space (%20).

I recommend that you do NOT use frames.
If you do use frames, then forget about using a DWT - DWTs will only add
to the confusion and difficulties you will find yourself in. A three
frame layout may be best - remember I have not seen your pages - banner
at the top, navigation at the left side, and content at the right.

If you choose to not use frames, and this is the best way to go, then in
all your pages remove the line <base target="contents">

Did I say that frames will give you and your users problems?
