My frustration is that I rarely want to draw the same e.g. box multiple times
-- I want the arrow pointer after I've drawn one shape.

Hello Andrew,

As far as I'm aware, this is default behaviour and you can't change it.

"ctrl+1" is the shortcut for the Pointer tool, which might help instead?
