We are having a problem with some PDF files being corrupted when they are
retreived from VSS 2005 or viewed from VSS with Adobe 7.0 Reader. The error
message we get varies, but follows the following pattern:

Adobe Reader: Illegal operation 'TJ' outside text object.

Then the contents show up as blank. The item in quotes changes but the
message is the same.

Looking a the properties for the document, the Adobe PDF version is 1.4
(Acrobat 5.x). For PDFs that transfer with no problems, the Adobe PDF
version is 1.3 (Acrobat 4.x). The same Adobe reader is being used in both
cases.

Has anyone else seen this problem or reported it? Is there a fix out for it?

Hi,

Thank you for your PDF files and I can reproduce it on my machine.

Based on my research, the file corrupts because VSS treats it as a text
file. You can use the following steps to resolve it when adding PDF files.

1. Click Add file button to add a file.
2. Select PDF file from the dialog box
3. In the Add file dialog box, click Advanced button.
4. Set File Type to Binary in the combobox.

This will prevent the PDF file from being corrupted.

You can also fix this permanently in VSS options:

1) Open Tools | Options | File Types tab
2) With <Relevant Masks> highlighted in the File Groups box
3) Add *.pdf to the Binary files list
4) Click OK

Now, VSS will automatically detect .pdf files as binary.

What if I want to declare a file type as Text?

Hi Bob,

For other files, they will be automatically considered as Text files.

Hi,

I'd like to know if this issue has been resolved yet. Is there anything
that I can help. I'm still monitoring on it. If you have any questions,
please feel free to post them in the community.

Kevin,

We will be testing out the solution you provided today or tomorrow. Sorry
for the delay, but the team was handed a high priority task to take care of.
Things are back to normal, so we can look at this now.

Thanks.

Let me know if that still doesn't work.

Hi,

If the method above still does not work, I think you can try a utility called Advanced PDF Repair to repair your PDF file. It works rather well for my corrupt PDF files. Its web address is http://www.datanumen.com/apdfr/

Hope this will help.

I have tried adding *.pdf to binary field in tools/options and have tried downloading VS80-KB943847-X86-INTL.exe. No success.

Someone just suggested that adding *.pdf might only affect project's created going forward. Scuse me while I leave to try and create a new project with the binary change . . . .
