Word uses the same "fill effects" that Publisher uses. It's easy to modify
the settings in Word because each time you bring up the fill effects it's
already filled in with your existing setting. However, Publisher's fill
effects dialog box for "More backgrounds..." comes up blank; not filled in
with existing settings. This makes it difficult to evaluate and try new
settings.

Surely this is either a problem with my setup or a bug in Publisher. Does
anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

I'm not sure I'm following what you are saying. When you select "background" under
the format menu, the background task pane opens, when you click "more backgrounds"
from this menu the fill effects menu opens and you can select other background
effects.

Yes, that's correct, but the problem is the fill effects dialog boxes are not
filled out with the existing settings. For example, if you were to create a
fill effect of two colors, and then after you've applied it and later want to
change it, when you open the fill effects dialog boxes again they are blank
and start from scratch, rather than having the existing settings already
filled in from which you could easily tweak and modify. Word already has
those settings filled it. It's an obvious user need, so I'm surprised that
Publisher has this problem.

Please let me know if that's not clear. If it would be helpful, I could
create a website and post screen shots of exactly what I'm describing. I
would post four screen shots; two each from Word and Publisher. The two from
Word would show a background and the fill effects dialog boxes opened after
the background had already been applied. You would see in the fill effects
dialog boxes that the settings in the dialog boxes equal what's on the actual
background. The two screen shots I would show from Publisher would be one
showing the background and the other showing the fill effects dialog boxes
opened after the background had already been applied. In the dialog boxes you
would see that the settings do not equal the existing background; they're
blank.

Please let me know what I should do next. Thank you!!!

Okay, I see what the problem is... You are correct it does not stick on the
background task pane and you do have to start from scratch. I so seldom use
backgrounds, I wasn't aware of this. And it does work in Word. I will report this to
the powers to be...

That was a good catch.

Mary, can you be sure JP gets this?

Was there a resolution to this?

You are replying to a very old post. What is the problem you are having and what
version Publisher are you using.
