Archived from groups: microsoft>public>word>spelling>grammar (more info?)

I'm running a standalone PC with the following:
- MS XP Pro, SP2
- MS Word 2002, SP3

Spell check used to work and highlight misspellings with a wavy red
underline. Then spell check suddenly stopped working. I wasn't making any
changes to my PC or to Word at the time that spell check stopped working.

Now Word does not flag misspelled words as I type, and if I press F7, Word
finds no errors and I get a message: "The spelling and grammar check is
complete."

Spell check doesn't flag spelling errors when I deliberately type gibberish:
qwer, lkjh, asdf, etc.

Before writing to you, I read your answers to other users. Based on what you
told others to do, I checked my settings which are shown here:
- MS Word... Tools... Language
- English (US) is the default; this is my language
- The following is checked: Detect language automatically
- MS Word... Tools... Spelling & Grammar
The following are checked:
- Check spelling as you type
- Always suggest corrections
- Ignore uppercase, numbers, Internet and file addresses

Also under MS Word... Tools... Spelling & Grammar
- Custom dictionaries... Custom.dic is my default; no other dictionaries
are listed

If you need more info. about my PC and settings I'll gladly provide it.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

....Dave

The only thing I can think of is to try the first step again, this time with
some of your gibberish selected.

Spell check still doesn't work.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

Did you select some of your gibberish and with it selected check the
language formatting?

You might want to check the following setting in MS Word:

Tools... Language... Set Language
- make sure there is no check mark in the box "Do not check spelling or
grammar"

I didn't know the setting existed, but when I accidentally found it, there
was a check mark in the box, so my spell check wasn't working. I removed the
check mark and it works fine now.

That checkmark is specific as to text (like Bold). It isn't a system
setting.

Check Tools > Language > Set Language

You want both boxes unchecked. You also want it set to the correct language
that you primarily use. When you type something in Spanish, select that text
and mark it as Spanish.

hallelujah to DaveEllisInNY ! why in the world does MicroSoft insist on
hiding various steps in so many different places? spell check is spell
check, and to hide a default "don't check spelling" in one place that
overrides a "please check spelling" somewhere else is ludicrous (and that's
the only thing that I can think of that won't get me in trouble with the
censors!). by the by -- some other user (there are a bunch of us who use
this particular machine) clicked the hidden override when no one was looking.

Sorry, but turning spell checking on or off is a system setting. You can
also, though turn it off for certain text. I regularly do this for citations
which contain proper names, as a part of a character style. It is under the
language settings because you can also tell Word that certain text is in a
different language and needs to be checked using that language instead of
the one you usually type in.

However, it would be nice if there could be a duplicate checkbox to control
it on the spelling and grammar options.

PostPosted: Wed Jun 25, 2008 8:25 pm    Post subject: Microsoft Office Word spell check sporatically not working [Login to view extended thread Info.]

I have experienced this same problem, Microsoft Office Word spell check sporatically not working on my computer. It is usually associated with a particular document and works fine on all other documents, but not always. What I mean is, it has occurred within a document such that even on other computers a dialog box still says it can not locate the dictionary file but if I retype it (cut and paste does NOT work) on a blank document I can check a specific word.

The problem can also exist within a document, that is, some areas of a document will not be exposed to spell check. It will even go so far as to recognize a misspelling in one part of a word and not another. For example, Problem might be seen as P roblem so the spell check underlines roblem even though there really is no space. I have a BA, graduated with honors, and have been tutoring others on the Windows Platform and Microsoft Office Suite for more than 15 years, but I can't get Word to spell check Problem, it is very irritating. This type of problem is usually associated with the computer so that if you check the document on another machine the spell check WILL work, however, when you return it to the previous machine, the spell check will again be problematic.

In other situations I have found the problem to exist in a particular computer, any document created by that software has the problem as does any document that is viewed by that particular software.

I have even experienced programs where the only words that are checked are those from the users personal spell check list, that is, those the user has manually added.

Thesarurus also does not generally work in these situations, but auto spell check (changing thier into their) DOES work!

Very problematic. Of course, I have checked all the obvious Language, Spelling & Grammar setting, all are appropriately set.

Thank you DaveEllisInNY!!

I've been going crazy because it just suddenly stopped... tried adding registry keys, disabling/reabling add-ins, NO HELP...

But this was it; the elusive, I don't know why or how it was suddenly checked, Language, Don't Spell Check box.... YEKS.. I think they do this on purpose!

Thank God for guys like you! Very Happy

I have read much on this and tried most. I can tell what it is doing, but can't not seem to fix it. Via Word Options, Proofing, the bottom Exceptions For show the two boxes checked. They keep defaulting to check. I can only uncheck the "hide grammar" box - but it too defaults back to being checked.

I've tried all the other fixes -- except the registry key renaming. I can not find the path and files in Vista Home. ??

Suggestions? Thanks.

I also have the same error... using Word 2003 for PC.

What I've discovered: if you select the entire doc, then go to the Languages, be sure to select "English" (or whatever), and uncheck the "don't spell check" box, it seems to uncheck. But spell checker is not restored document-wide. Go through these same steps again and you'll find it rechecked. (Actually, it is not checked in my case at least, but solid green, indicating PART of the document is still checked.)

(Side note: for the few in this thread that are determined to convince us its a system wide thing: no, its not. This feature is a formatting thing, and overrides all system issues. For those toying with their registry: don't. Reinstalling or taking to a different computer won't help either. It's embedded in the file.)

The workaround that worked for me:
Go section by section, that is, anything marked with a different style, like "Heading 1", has to be independently selected, then go up to Tools>Language>English (uncheck the do not show spelling). Do this for every single section, be it just a header, or body of text.

In doing so in my document, each section now has its spell checker working fine. And I've done every single section. Yet, perplexingly, if you select the whole document, and Tools>Language>English, you still find the box solid green, telling me somewhere it still thinks in spell checker shouldn't be turned on. Where, I have no idea, because I intentionally put spelling errors in every section, so as far as I can tell, it works for me throughout, but it seems some hidden part of the document does not have spell checker turned on.

At any rate, for me its fixed as far as I can see, and the feature as I described above with the green box for the whole doc is just an annoyance, but not a problem. (But if I add a new section, I'll definitely double check for spelling problems.)

hope that helps someone...

one more thing: go into a new document, then in Tools>Language>English, be sure to uncheck the box, and then hit "default", otherwise you may have inadvertently turned off this feature for every new document (affecting the Normal.dot template)

one last reply:

i went into documents from 2005, and when i selected all, then Tools>Language>English, i found the "don't check spelling" box solid green there too, implying some part of the doc is not to be checked, though these were simple documents.

I now wonder if this is not normal situation for this feature, at least for any that has sections in it (delineated by headings and what not). At any rate, the section by section fix (apply Tools>Language>English and uncheck by section) as described 2 posts above this one seems to work, and I have no more problems.

good luck!
