I have a document that I received from another user, and am currently making
changes to it. The auto correct and spell checker do not catch errors. I
checked to make sure that the correct options for auto correct and spell
checker are turned on, and tested in a new document that they do work.
I believe that somehow the auto correct and spell check options are not
functioning in this document specifically; is there a way to turn those
options on?

Open the Word document where this problem occurs. Press Ctrl+A
to select all of the text, click on Tools | Language | Set
Language | <choose your language> | uncheck the "Detect language
automatically" and "Do not check spelling or grammar" boxes |
Default | OK, and press F7 to rerun spellcheck. If you are
prompted to save changes to your Normal.dot global template, say yes.

Just wanted to check--I do want to make a change to my Normal.dot global
template? I thought there were very few instances where you want to make a
change to the the normal.dot global template.

Not directly to Normal.dot, but the "Default" button will change
the language and spellcheck settings in both the problem document
and Normal.dot.
