Multiple users access a document to add markup or review comments. Each user
is automatically associated with a color that appears in the "balloon" type
of Comment on the right. In addition selected text appears in the same color.
How do I change the color that was automatically associated with a user?

I've wasted too much time 20-30 minutes looking through online Help and
other resources.

If you set the markup color as "By Author" in Tools | Options | Track
Changes, each "reviewer" will get a different color, but you have no control
over what color is assigned to each user, and they will vary from computer
to computer, so that, for example, User A may be red on her own machine and
blue on someone else's, but her color will be different from anyone else's.

Unfortunately, the reason you couldn't find help about choosing the user's
color is that there isn't any way to do so.

More detail is at

Then why is it that the person I received the documents from's comments are
red and then when I insert a comment my track changes are also red? I have
the settings as "By Author."

Since it's unlikely that you're both using the same name, the likelihood is
that the sender has used the "Remove personal information from file
properties on save" option and hers are labeled "Author." I would still
expect yours to be a different color at least until you save, however. And I
assume that you actually have the color for comments (and not just
insertions and deletions) set to "By Author"?
