inserting a picture or object from a file allows the you to see where the
desired file could be and begin to browse. But at this point the application
dies and a Ctrl;Alt;Del shows the application is not responding.

DO NOT change registry or uninstall Office. As Dave Peterson wrote in "Excel
and Word Hang Up..." a quick and simple fix can be found at
http://www.techweb.com/wire/security/185303742. Don't know how it works but
it
does. Page two of the article gives a link to "Kellys Korner" for the fix. It
worked perfectly.

It works by changing the registry as recommended.

I have the same problem. When I try to insert an object from a file in word
2003 (ex. email or text file) Word locks up until closed. I tried running
this registry fix on my machine and it did not fix the problem. Does anyone
Have any other solutions?

In Windows XP, right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows
desktop or in the Start menu, left-click on Disconnect Network Drive,
and disconnect any mapped drives that are not currently available.

I disconnected my network drives and restarted, but it did not fix the
problem. I also tried to boot the machine in Safe Mode with networking and
it did not work. Any other ideas on how to fix this?

Does Word hang up when you try to browse to a different folder to select
a file to attach, or does Word let you select the file but it hangs up
when you click on OK to insert the file? Exactly what file type are you
trying to insert? If you are trying to insert a plain-text file, then
what happens if you use Insert->File instead of Insert->Object->Create
from File?

I know that this thread is old but I just started having a similar problem
yesterday. I am running Word 2002 on XP Professional. Office XP was done as
a clean install about 6 months ago. This computer is part of a domain and
has both local and network profiles. The application has run problem-free in
all profiles until now.

There is one profile where insert-picture-from file crashes Word every time.
It doesn't matter if I'm trying to insert from a local folder or a network
folder. The dialog box stops responding and the application crashes. If I
do manage to navigate to a location thumbnails of photos do not display
properly.

I have logged on to other profiles on this computer and everything works
problem-free when inserting a picture from file. Thumbnails display and I
can navigate freely to various local or network folders.

On the problem profile I did Detect and Repair but that did not help. I
deleted the normal.dot and let it rebuild--no change. I cleaned out all temp
files, too.

The user profile has no other problems with other applications--only Word.
Since this problem is only for one user account i do not want to do anything
in the registry. I just want to fix the problem for that user if I can.

This is an update since i don't want to leave my last post unanswered. It
turns out that it was not Word but a corrupt image in My Documents that
caused the crash. First I had to open another folder, select another view
other than Thumbnails (I chose Details) and then selected the option to apply
this view to all folders. When I went to My Documents in Explorer I could
navigate in the My Pictures folder without crashing since the folder wasn't
trying to display a thumbnail of the corrupted image. As soon as I deleted
the offending image (guess and check) all was well in all areas of the OS and
applications, including Word.
