It sounds like you're in a Protected doc. Go to Tools>Protection & see if
there is a command in the submenu that reads as "Unprotect Document". If you
attempt to remove the protection you may be prompted for a password.

If this isn't the issue be sure to specify version info when you respond.

Are you using Word 2007? In earlier versions, Tools is one of the items on
the Menu bar.

If using 2007, go to the Review Tab of the Ribbon if the Restrict Editing &
Formatting Task Pane isn't displayed. Then click the Protect Document icon
(right end of the Ribbon) & choose Restrict Editing & Formatting. At the
bottom of the pane click the Stop Protection button - if there is no
password require you will be allowed to revise the document. If prompted for
a password & you don't know what it is you can't make changes anywhere the
Find Next Region... And Show All Regions... Buttons highlight for you.

I have the same problem, I never locked it, and both Office and word are
doing the same thing. The computer is a dell, 1 week old,

any suggestions, the ribbon is totally locked, and I get this message,

This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked

thanks

What computer, what OS, what version of Office. If it is Office 2007, has it
been activated? Is it trial version that has expired?

The 'number key' only allows you to install the applications, not activate:
you need to use on line Activation. Use Alt+F, I, then select Resources
button and Activate.

HELLO!
I have the same problem. My Office 2007 is "locked".
I also can't click anything in the Tabs. Only the Office button works to
open or save doc's. I can't type & I can't click on Review, to change
settings at all!
-I DID download this office- (it's not bought in a store) could that be the
problem?
THX a bunch.

If you downloaded it, it is just a trial version, and it has probably
expired.

I also am getting this message. I have a 3 week old Gateway, Vista Home
Premium, Word 2007. I did activate the trial version using the product key,
and it has not expired yet. I keep getting a message reminding me that I will
need to buy the full version and can do it through the internet
(recommended). For today, I just want to do my work, and am having the same
problem as previous posts. THe task bars are locked, I can not type anything.

The clock starts when the trial version is *installed* not when the user
"gets around" to activating it.

It is definitely a symptom that it has expired.

There is no Tools>Protection area on my page. I have Window Vista Basic and
that option is not available. All of the options on the taskbar are greyed
out, even the Protect Document tab.

Any help is appreciated.

If this is the same issue you posted in the other newsgroup, please stick to
ONE post for the issue. You'll drive yourself nuts trying to find all of the
responses.

Re: Word 2007 This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked

Actually, there are multiple reasons why a document might say this at the bottom:

1) You are using a trial, or unactivated version of Word - buy the product and activate it
2) some portion of the document may be protected (access via Developer toolbar) - the solution is posted above
3) And this one took me a while... [Office Button] -> Prepare menu has a "Mark as Final" option that makes a document Read Only. If this has been done, there is an icon in the Status Bar (to the right of the Word Count) that says "Marked as Final" when you hover over it. To undo, just go back to the Prepare menu as select the "Mark as Final" option again.

I realize this is an old post, but it came up in the search engine so I'm hoping people will find this additional information useful.

Here is what happened to me, in case you ever get stuck with the same problem:

Microsoft ropes you in to their free trial for Word/Office 2007, but they don't tell you that when you open one of your existing files, it will convert to the new system, and any new ones you create will be on the new system. Turns out that, if you don't pay some $300-700 to activate their Word/Office 2007, you are out of luck. Then, if you don't upgrade and pay their extortion money at the end of the free trial, you get locked out of your own documents, including my ENTIRE EXCELL DATA BASE!! If I pulled a bait-and-switch scam like that, I would be serving time at Lompoc!

Anyway, what I did discover is that I can go into the original Word 2003 program, and open the originals from there. Phew!! It is much less convenient--a hassle, to say the least--but at least I can still access my files, without making the extortion payment. It is obvious why they don't tell you that.

I installed my legal Office 2007 last month. However, I did not activate it on the desktop computer in my office in the garden shed, because I currently don't have wireless. Is this the reason that 'selection' is locked to Office 2007 apps? They had been working fine for a month...

Is the only way of resolving this to install wireless?

Some of the posts on this thread have been v helpful. Hope someone can answer this query.

Best wishes
