We have serious performance problems with Office 2003 SP1 running on terminal
server (Windows Server 2003/Citrix PS4). Occasionally Word almost freezes
when a user works with a document. Any keyboard typing causes it to stop
responding for a long period of time (seconds to minutes). The cursor quickly
changes its forms (text edit <-> arrow). This problem is occured not in all
documents, nor all users experience it.

It is known that Russian spellchecking engine in SP1 is bad. Those
performance issues may be related to MSGRRU32.DLL v. 2.0.14.0 which is
installed along with SP1. But I cannot stop the background spellchecking to
prove if it is a real source of the problem. Although all authomatic spelling
options are turned off Word still displays animated spelling icon
(book-and-pencil) in the status bar.

Is it possible to prevent this spellchecking feature to run in a background?

Select all text in your document and under Tools > Language select "do not
check spelling or grammar."

Note, though, that one of the most frequent problems people have is that
they have this set and don't know about it.

Charles,

I know about this way. But users do need to check spelling, at least
manually. If we mark the whole text "do not check" then users should select
its language manually before spellchecking. The usual way "Select all ->
select a text language" does not work well because the text is a mix of
Russian and English words (we are speaking about programming project
documentation). Imagine big tables (REALLY big - tens and hundreds pages)
with English terms, procedures, and variables' names and Russian phrases
which need to be checked before be sent to a customer...

So, have some character styles, at least one for Russian language and one
for English. Set the characteristic of the styles to not check. Then, prior
to final, change it to allow checking for each of the styles.
