I am using Microsoft Office 2007 on Windows 7 RC. I now have 3-4 Word files
that I cannot delete because I get an error that says WOrd alreadyhas these
files open. This error persists no matter how many times I do a hard or soft
reboot and whether or not Microsoft Word is actually open. HELP!

This usually means that there are "lock files" that have not been deleted.
See “Description of how Word creates temporary files”
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632 for a description of these "lock"
or "user" files, which will be in the same folder as the file you're trying
to delete. Often you will need to delete the temp files and then restart
Windows before you can delete the files.

I have read the material you referenced regarding temporary files and I do
not see any information that helps me find a way to delete these files. For
your additional information, these are .doc files that were all extracted
from a zip file. When I attempt to change the name of the file, I got the
error message. I also get the same error message if I attempt to move these
files to another directory. Any other advice??

Were they extracted and saved in a new location, or did you simply
double-click on the zip file? If that's what you did, then they're not
"really" files yet. You need to right-click on the zip file and choose
Extract All (it then makes a folder containing the files).

The zip archive that I actually used to extract the files from was deleted
and the files remain. That zip file wa 1st copied from another directory
before the extraction was attempted. The file was extracted and then the zip
file deleted.

Have you tried deleting the .zip archive instead or as well?
