In 2003, we had several documents with customized toolbars listing the
Available Styles, Generate TOC, Update TOC, and such. This was helpful for
our users who are not proficient in styles. They just clicked the custom
toolbar and picked the styles from there. However, in 2007, I opened those
documents and the custom toolbars are gone. I went to the Import/Export
feature (Organizer in 2003) and there is no tab to import the existing
toolbars. Any suggestions on how to create custom toolbars in Word 2007?

Hi Ardell,

If the toolbars were separately created (new toolbars) in a prior Word version then they should appear under the 'add-ins' tab in
Word 2007. If you modified standard (built in) toolbars from a prior version of Word then those probably won't appear in Word 2007
by simply opening the document.

My situation is more tricky--I've got custom toolbars created in 2003 templates that show in the Add-ins tab in 2007, but as soon as I convert the template to 2007, the Add-ins tab is empty! Does anyone know why this is happening? I need the employees in my company to have easy access to these commands (most buttons run a macro also created in 2003). Thanks!!

I found a post in the Office Experts forum (http://www.theofficeexperts.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7600) that gives an answer - an add-in you can purchase that allows you to customize and build your own "ribbons" - like creating custom toolbars. I have the same situation at my office - I think i'll have to re-create the custom toolbars and the macros, though. The 2003 custom toolbar displays, but none of the macros work.

Here's the link to the add-in:
http://pschmid.net/office2007/ribboncustomizer/index.php

One downside, I just found out, is that it currently doesn't support adding macros to the toolbar, which, personally, seems to defeat its purpose, at least for me...

Here's a link to Word MVP that describes this add-in really well, along with another add-in called Toolbar Toggle:
