copy messages to imap folder

I have followed the advice I've found with regards to creating a copy of a
message that I've sent in the imap server's sent items folder.

I turned off the option to save a copy in the sent items folder.

I started with a blank rule and selected the option to move a copy of a sent
item to a specified folder. I selected the sent items folder.

When I send a message, I get a rules error dialog box that says "cannot copy
to the sent items folder." There is no reason provided.

I can manually drag and drop items from the local sent folder to the imap
sent items folder.

It should work. It does for me. What version of Outlook are you using?
Enable diagnostic logging and see if the log file gives you a clue as to
what's happening. I can't tell you exactly how because you decided to keep
your version of Outlook a secret.
