Some years ago I somehow managed to configure the text [font., color, size.]
of any and all text that displayed a URL address typed in Outlook. It could
have been before 2002 was released, such as a previous version. I don't have
a clue how or where that configuration was accomplished. Now I'd like to
stop the purple italics in a large size. It's really awful looking.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

You probably configured this in Internet Explorer;
Control Panel-> Internet Options-> button Colors and/or the button
Accessibility
