I have a customer who is writing a book. She doesn't remember which callenges
Word gave her except the save as box. She added another page and saved it.
Now all she has is the added page. The hundreds she had saved seem to be
replaced by the one. Doesn't Word make a backup of documents and if so where
might it be located?

If you 'save as' rather than 'save', Word warns that the file exists and
asks if you are sure that you want to do this. If you answer 'Yes' the file
is saved over the original without creating any form of backup. You only get
a backup (in the same folder) if you 'save' and the option to create a
backup is checked in tools > options. If the customer has not saved separate
backups of this document, lets hope that it wasn't a masterpiece or that she
has a good memory!

Hi Graham,

She couldn't remember what she clicked on. I guess after that much typing I
wouldn't pay attention either. However, I did find a backup in the Word
folder. It's missing the last seven pages for some reason but seven is a lot
better to redo than hundreds. She was very greatful. This won't be a
masterpiece. She is an elementary school principal writing a educational
textbook. Thank you for helping. I've copied your response and e-mailed it to
her. Good information for her to know. Mike.

Not a bad result then Smile Remind her to save often (and make a few extra
backups elsewhere).
