If you 'save as' rather than 'save', Word warns that the file exists and
asks if you are sure that you want to do this. If you answer 'Yes' the file
is saved over the original without creating any form of backup. You only get
a backup (in the same folder) if you 'save' and the option to create a
backup is checked in tools > options. If the customer has not saved separate
backups of this document, lets hope that it wasn't a masterpiece or that she
has a good memory!
