I'm finding that all my new documents have spellchecking turned off in some
way that I cannot see how to turn it back on.
Some example scenarios:
Create a new document. Type in some garbage. There's no red underline.
Save the document as Word 2003. Open it in Word 2003 (on another machine).
Still no red underline.
Create a new document in Word 2003 and paste in the contents of the original
document. Still no red underline.
Paste into the new document wit Keep Text Only. The red underline appears on
the misspelled word.
Save this document in Word 2003 and open it in Word 2007. The red underline
appears.
Conclusions:
There is some 'formatting' type of setting that is common to both Word 2003
and Word 2005 that inhibits spellchecking and is turned on by defualt in
(,my installation of) Word 2007 but not in 2003.
Any idea what the setting is and how I change it?
Thanks,
Jasper. |

Most likely, your Normal.dotx template has "do not check spelling"
applied to the single (empty) paragraph, so anything you type into a
new blank document acquires that setting. The setting stays with the
text through conversion to 2003 and copy/paste, but is discarded by
pasting as text only.
In a blank document in Word 2007, select the lone paragraph mark. On
the Review ribbon, in the Proofing group, click the Set Language
button. In the dialog, I think you'll find that the "Do not check
spelling or grammar" box is checked. Uncheck it, and then click the
Default button to apply the setting to the Normal template. Click Yes
in the message that asks whether to change the default, and click OK
to close the Language dialog.

That works - thanks.
But why have such an unusual set up for the Normal template in the first
place?

The "do not check spelling" box is _not_ checked by default. Someone
or something changed it after installation. Sometimes things "just
happen" to the Normal template -- see

I'm having the same problem with Word 2007 after running repair to fix
another problem. I've gone to a blank doc, highlighted the paragraph mark
adn then clicked on the "Set Language" button. "Do not check spelling or
grammar" is not checked. Any other suggestions?

It sounds as if either
1. You have an Add-in that's changinge this setting
2. Changes aren't being saved to your DATA key
If you hold down CTRL to start Word in Safe Mode, does the behavior
persist or does the setting stay in place during the current Word
session?

| I have a similar problem and when trying the solution below, Word will not accept a change in language back to English U.S. I can switch to any other language. Spellchecker is not working at all. |
