| The registry renaming method worked for me. My customers and colleagues thank you! Me too!

| Topaz - I am having this EXACT SAME problem. I have a computer that's given to students by the school, and they just updated to Microsoft 2007. All of my office programs have this exact same problem.
I'll see the tech guy on either Tuesday or Wednesday and have you know if he can fix it, and what he did. It's highly annoying.

In my case the culprit was in the resilliency settings.
I renamed the following key only and the functionality returned.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Resiliency\DisabledItems
The spell check feature must have crashed at some point and been disabled. |

It took me HOURS to find a solution to this spell check problem. For me, spell check was working in newly created documents, but not in a template I downloaded from Microsoft – a template for a resume no less! I tried the ‘languages’ fix and several others, to no avail. Here was the solution that finally worked for me:
1.On the ‘Home’ tab, in the document ‘Styles’ section, left click on the highlighted style (this is the style your document is using)
2.Choose ‘Modify’
3.A new screen should appear, at the bottom-left of this screen click ‘Format’ and choose ‘Language’
4.UNCHECK the ‘Do not check spelling or grammar’
5.Click Okay
6.Now, be sure to apply this to ‘All new documents based on this template/
7.Click OK
8.Problem solved! (Hopefully this works for you too!) |

Spencer is correct, you should not delete any keys. Rename them, deleting is bad!
There are only two sub directories you need to concern yourself with:
1. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0
and/or
2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\ApplicationName(Word, Outlook, Exel, etc.)
Rename these keys by going to run, regedit, and inside the registry editor navigate to the following keys and right click and rename them to:
1. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0old
2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlookold (example for Outlook spell check) or HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Wordold (for Word spell check)
Reboot, Open Program, and Office will recreate them.
As someone has already posted, creating a new profile does the same thing. So if your spell check works under a new profile, your current_user registry is corrupted, and this fix should work fine. If a new profile has the same problem, take a can of gas, pour over computer, light a cig, and problem solved. |
Renaming registry entries worked for me - I am sooooooooooooo grateful! I joined the forum just to say this! javascript:emoticon(' ') |

The exact registry folder entry to delete is this one:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0\Override
Delete (or rename) the Override folder, restart Word, and Spell check will work again. If not, check the other solutions above regarding disabled add-ins and options in Word options. |

I fixed my ‘spell check not working’ error today.
First I went into the office button (coloured squiggly in top left hand corner of Word) and selected WORD OPTIONS in the bottom corner. Go POPULAR then LANGUAGE SETTINGS. I enabled the editing language to ENGLISH UK (using the add/remove buttons) and also on the bottom of that panel I selected ENGLISH UK as my primary editing language.
I then went into the REVIEW tab on the top of a WORD document and in the first panel (Proofing) I selected the ‘SET LANGUAGE’ ICON and selected ENGLISH UK. I also made sure that the box for DO NOT CHECK SPELLING OR GRAMMAR was UNCHECKED.
My spell check in word 2007 is now working fine. It self corrects as I type and identifies possible errors by being underlined in red squiggle. Prior to me making these changes some of the language was set at ENGLISH UK and some set as ENGLISH US so perhaps they all have to be set to the same language. |
