I have installed Office 2007 and when using either Word or Outlook the spell
checker is not working. I can spell a word incorrectly, highlight all text
and run Spelling and Grammar and it comes back with "The spelling and grammar
check is complete.". I have verified my Lanuage and also tried turning off
"Detect language automatically". Any ideas?
Thanks in advance, |

Check to make sure that you don't have No Proofing checked under Languages
setting for the document.

And note that you must select all the text in the document and then clear
the "Do not check spelling and grammar" box to make sure this applies to all
the text.

Can you navigate me to this No Proofing check box? All I see (under the
Review tab) -> Set Language is the "Do not check spelling or grammar", which
is unchecked.

You're correct: I was having a Word 2003 moment. Have you checked in Word
Options, Proofing that it hasn't been set to skip proofing?

Terry,
Everything is setup correctly in the Proofing page. There has to be
something I'm missing, but I don't know what. I'm running out of ideas.

The only additional clue that may help is that if this is both Word and
Outlook, then it I am well confused. In Office 2007, Outlook does not
actually use Word as the editor: it has its own abridged version of Word
packed into a .dll file. So theoretically, it is totally independent of
Word - except (I guess) that the spell check and grammar functions or
proofing libraries must be shared. However, the user's custom dictionaries
are not shared: any spellings added to the Word dictionary have to be added
separately to the Outlook dictionary. I thought that spelling was totally
separate as well, but form your symptoms, they aren't. I'm struggling with
this one.

Did spelling in Word an Outlook 2007 *ever* work? Or was it dead from the
get go?
In Word Options - Proofing, make sure of the following:
1. Check spelling as you type is Checked.
2.Hide spelling errors... at the bottom of the dialog is *not* Checked.
3. Click Check Document.
Still doesn't work?
Try starting Word in Safe mode. Hold down the Ctrl key when you start Word,
and keep it pressed until you see the prompt to start in safe mode. Say Yes.
Does spelling work now?
If not, then try Word Options - Resources - Diagnose, and see if you can
repair the problem away.
Also... what about grammar... is it broken, too?

Hi Topaz,
What language do you have set on the text? What is the spelling of the Word and does it make a difference if you change to a
different font such as Arial then run the check?
If you select the misspelled Word and use Shift+F1 to open the 'Reveal Formatting' task pane what Font and what language are shown
for that selected word?
If you click on the 'Language' choice in the Taskpane what boxes are checked in the dialog that pops up?

Herb,
No, Outlook 2007 spell checking has never worked. It did work in 2003.
Your top suggestion didn't work, Safe mode didn't work. The Diagnose fixed
one problem, but didn't tell me what it was. However, spell checking still
not working. Grammar checking does seem to work.
One interested thing: If I type "Asdf asdf". It puts the red squiggly line
under the second asdf, but not the first one. Is spell check working??
However, if I type "I asdf asdf" again the second one. But, if I type "I
would like spel chcker to work. " I get nothing - no spelling problems
detected.
What the heck!

Hi Herb
Spelling in OL2007 has always been OK for me. Have there been problems
reported?

That's the "Flag repeated words" setting (Office - Word Options - Proofing)
that's catching the asdf asdf item.

The language is set to English. No it doesn't make a difference if I change
the font.
Shift+F1 reveals the Arial Font and English (U.S.) language
"Do not check spelling or grammar" is not checked
"Detect language automatically" is checked

Start Word in Safe Mode and test the spell checker again. To start in Safe
Mode, hold down the Shift Key and launch Word (note: keep Outlook closed
whilst doing this). Does spelling work in safe mode?

Have you already 'ignored mistakes once? If so Think that gets logged with
the file. Maybe reset?

Safe mode doesn't work and the suggested ignored mistakes once doesn't work.
I have uninstalled 2007 and reinstalled 2003. Spell checker works. I
installed 2003 and reinstalled 2007. Doesn't work. I installed 2007,
reinstalled 2003, and upgraded to 2007. Doesn't work!!!!! This is so
frustrating!

I had this same issue. Although I did not find the exact solution, there is
a way to get full functionality back. I logged onto my workstation as a
different user and spell checker worked just fine. After learning this, I
renamed my old profile and logged back in and I have spell checker again.
You should log on as a new user 1st to verify, before trashing your old
profile.
Good luck!

It is really bizarre. This is the first we've had this reported and from
what you have done so far would suggest a bug. I suggest that you call
Microsoft and log a problem ticket so that it gets to the development team
to investigate.
