Word 2003 stop responding due to "spelling check"

Hi there,

I'm using Word 2003. Few days ago, while I was typing my document, it
suddenly stopped responding and from the spell check icon at the bottom (the
little book with a writing pen), I could tell that it was performing a spell
check. After about 10 minutes, it stopped checking. But it happened again
after few minutes. I tried to disable the spelling and grammar check by
unchecking all the associated boxes, but it did not help. Does anyone see
this problem before?

AFAIK the little book with a pen writing in it means that a help index is
being created, and not a spell check being carried out.

Thank you for your response. May I know if there is any way to disable the
help index creation or any hot-key to stop the index building?
