Is there a better Dictionary program that I can install instead of the one
that comes with Office XP Word 2002? I have to use my little electronic
Franklin Spell Master more times than I care to. It seems that the Word 2002
dictionary is very limited in words. I have all but given up using it. When
ever I am typing a letter of any kind, I generally have my Spell Master at
the ready because I know that the selection of words that Word gives are not
complete. Thanks.

Hello Gilloz,

Thanks a lot for your question. We have worked a lot to improve the coverage
of the spell-checker lexicon in the newer versions of Office. We have
described some of the improvements on our blog (for instance in a post such
as the following one, where a colleague of mine discusses some of the
improvements in Office 2007, which, incidentally, also includes a contextual
speller:
http://blogs.msdn.com/naturallanguage/archive/2006/07/25/678346.aspx).

I'm interested in knowing more about the words you failed to find in the
Word dictionary (I suppose you meant the Word spell-checker, and not the
Encarta dictionary, which is also accessible with its definitions from the
Office Research & Reference pane). If you have concrete examples, feel free
to give them here: these words may already be included in the more recent
versions of the speller, but we may also be able to improve it with your help.

Thanks for your feedback!

Thierry

Hello:

Yes. The one that comes to mind is what I tried to use this morning. It is
Pneumonia. I knew I mispelled it, but the dictionary for Word came up with
other words that weren't even close to the original word. Seems to be a
common word, don't you think? This comes to mind because I tried to use it
this same day. I guess I expected more from Microsoft Word compare to the
Franklin Spell Master.

Thanks for your feedback, Gilloz,

I can reassure you: the word "pneumonia" is in the Word speller dictionary
(I'm currently at home and I can't check the Word 2002 version), but it is
definitely in Word 2003 and in the most recent version of the speller (Word
2007), which does not squiggle it. The word is also in the Encarta
dictionary, which you can consult from Word (ALT-click on the word and you'll
see its definition in the Word Research and Reference pane).

Best wishes,

Thierry
