Embedded web links - Word 2000

Previously, on clicking a weblink in a document the Word app window stayed
open.
After a reinstal on windows xp the word document closes on clicking a web
link

I would like to return to my original i.i. click a web link and the word
window stays open.

Anyone out there old enough to remember Word 2000 and it's foibles??
