PostPosted: Tue Apr 13, 2004 6:42 am    Post subject: Template Wizard from Excel 97 to 2003
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>excel>templates (more info?)

I am trying to restore the functionality in an installation of Excel 2003
that I previously had in Excel 97. I have some templates from the 97 version
that I want to use in the 2003 version.

In Excel 97, using the Template Wizard with Data Tracking, I created order
forms that add the data entered into a separate database file upon saving
the form. However, in the Tools>Add-ins menu, the Template Wizard is no
longer available in the 2003 version as it was in Excel 97. I need the
Template Wizard to edit my previously created templates to point to a new
location for the data files which store the information from each time the
form is filled in.

I cannot find any information about a "Template Wizard" in the 2003 Help
files nor online.

Has MS eliminated the availability of this tool from Excel 2003?

This toolset worked perfectly in Excel 97 and it would be a disappointing
"upgrade" to lose something as valuable as this due to a newer software
version. If I can isolate the Template Wizard files in the Excel 97
installation, can I somehow install this tool into Excel 2003?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

Regards,
James Harris

Hello James,

The Excel Template wizard with data tracking is still available but you have
to download it from Microsoft when you have version 2002. the name of the
file you want is TMPLWIZ.exe and you can find it at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=E01EA3D8-094D-4ED1-88DA-F4B8B2AD28BD&displaylang=en

Good luck.

Hi Peri:

Thanks for the tip. I did try what you suggested, but the add-in download
does not seem to install on my system. I am running Windows XP with Excel
2003, but MS Download page lists:

System Requirements
.. Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows ME,
Windows NT
..This download works with the following Office applications:
a. Excel 2002

The install program zips by so quickly that I cannot see any file names or
directory locations for the installation of the template wizard. So, I'll
keep looking for the tmplwiz.exe file to see if I can locate a version that
will work on Excel 2003 and WinXP, but so far I can't find any other
offerings on the Microsoft Office website.

Thanks,
James H

Hi,

This is something I have been looking for for a long time as well.

I tried installing the 2002 version, just in case. It didn't seem to
create any files (I searched for all files created after I ran the
download).

Any developments your end?

Duncan

I agree,
I used Excel wizard to create a bunctional order fook allowing tracking
of data nd auto-numbering increasing by 1 each tine the template was
opened. Not available in XP version. I'm wondering why I upgraded if
its so difficult to do anything other tnan the basic functions. I was
capagle of teh is on '98 plus much more via the templates.

That seems the be the road that Microsoft follows these days. Often the
older versions had more. Not only Excel, but free products like Media
Player. Used to have Graphic Equaliser etc built in. Now you have to
buy them from a third party. Same goes for these templates.

I find it hard to justify paying for these things which were free
before.

Word and Excel 6 for Windows 3.11 still do all the things most people
need. That is why they were great products then and everyone bought
them. Microsoft seem to have forgotten this and become
"extra-functionality" pushers.

The lesson to be learnt is, don't upgrade unless there is something new
that you really need.

Maybe I will dust off the old Office 97 cds.

I had the same problem - try this - it seems to work fine on XP and XP Pro
using Office 2003. The other response was good - the installer does not seem
to work since I downloaded and tried it several times. However, getting
another copy does the trick - I had a copy of Office 2000 running on another
machine so there is a good probablility that any copy of the wizard will
work. Got the file WZTEMPLT.XLA from the "program files\microsoft
office\office\library" file and copied to the corresponding Office 2003 file.
Excel's default location appears to be in the Microsoft\office\addins
directory in the user application documents directory but I don't like having
data I need strewn all over the computer so I can't conveniently find it for
backups. You can probably put it anywhere you like because you then have to
tell Excel where it is. Load an Excel sheet, got to Tools then Addins where
you get a dropdown box and select browse. Select WZTEMPLT.XLA from wherever
you put it and close the dialog. You may get a message that it is already
somewhere else - OK. Once the dialog closes go to the Data menu and you
should find the Template Wizard.
