I want to be able to add numbers in a table column. Can Word do that? How?

From the Tables menu, select Formula.

Why don't I see it? Is that where it is in Word 2007?

First you have to put the cursor in the table cell where you want the
total to appear. Being in a table causes the Table tab to appear on
the ribbon. Click the Layout tab under Table. Look in the Data group
on the far right; the bottom item is Formula.

The next time you have a question, please say in your first post that
you have Word 2007. It often makes a difference in the kind of answer
you get.
