Running Windows 2000 with Office XP with all office updates installed.

The spell checker in word underlines in red correct words such as
"The". All settings in spell-checker options have been checked against
other pc's without this problem. Checking grammar is disabled (not
that has made any difference anyway). Keyboard & language settings are
all set to UK English.

Uhm...any ideas anybody? Apart from a complete re-install of office?

Are you sure you are not seeing Track Changes rather than spell checking.

Hi,
Done that. 'Mark selected text' comes up as English (UK) and English
(US). All Input Locals, keyboard settings etc are English UK.

Yep. Sure its not that.

The red squiggle under the word goes away (obviously) if I untick
'check spelling as you type'. Also, if you go to Tools > Spelling and
Grammar F7 to do a spell check it will give you suggestions such as
'Theo' and 'He' for the 'misspelled' word "The". Its happening on
several PC's too not just one.

A removal of the whole office XP suite and re-installation of Office XP
has not resolved it either :0

Hi Abertech,

Have you checked the language of the marked words? My guess is that the
text, itself, is not formatted as English, but as something else (French,
perhaps). Click in such a Word, then go to Tools/Language/Set language
and see what's selected?

If you right click on one of these words, what are the suggested
spellings, if any?

OK... Search the system for the *.lex and *.dic files (lex = proofing
tool dic; dic = user's custom dic). Are there any *.exc in this
location? This would be an EXClude dictionary, which would have the
effect of marking correctly spelled words as incorrect if they're
listed in the file.
