Archived from groups: microsoft>public>word>spelling>grammar (more info?)

Office Version: Word 97
O/S: XP Pro - Sp2
Problem: Word 97 will not check the spelling within a word doc and is
grayed out in the options area.

I tried to check and see if the user has permissions set within the Regestry
for that particular value, which is noted in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article
Q257643. I could not find the registry key listed within the article for
spelling. The grammer key was available but the the spelling key did not
exist. The user has MS Outlook 2000 and the spell checker works perfectly
fine.

Stumped

Yes I originally used this article as posted earlier... the following
registry key is not available in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\Spelling

Hi NinaMo
I had the same problem in Word 2000 when I was trying to fill in an
application form that had been saved as a word.Doc. I overcame the problem by
click Unprotect Document under the Tools menu. I then right clicked on the
spell check symbol at the bottom of the Window and made sure 'Hide spelling
error' and 'Hide grammatical errors' where unchecked. You might also want to
check the setting under options are as you want them. If you make sure you
save the document in this state it should keep the same formatting when you
reopen it

Hope this helps - Good Luck
