Hi there,

Here is my problem. Spell checkers seems to be running all of the time. By
this I mean that the little pencil is writing in the little book at the
bottom of the window all of the time.

On other computers I have seen the pencil stop with an X beside it, but mine
never does this and it is eating major resources and making words response
time to commands terrible.

Any help would be fantastic

Version of Word involved, here? Do you see this in all documents, or only some
documents? How about a new document?

Hi Cindy,

I am using Word 2003 and it happens with all documents that I open. When I
start a new document the pencil starts writing as soon as I type and doesn't
let up.

If I open a document that was created in Word XP (before I "upgraded" to
2003) the pencil doesn't start until I make changes, unlike documents that
were created in 2003 that have the pencil going as soon as I open them.

Hope this info helps!

-Duncan

If you hold down CTRL while starting Word, then test by typing in a new document,
do things work more as you'd imagine they ought?

Cindy,

Even in safe mode the problem persists!
I think the next step is to throw the computer in a lake and see if it still
does it!

It probably would; but I imagine lots of other things would stop, as well Smile

Have you tried Help/Detect and Repair?

If you have Word as the Outlook email editor, try disconnecting that, reboot
the machine, then open Word and see what happens.

FWIW, since this happens only in new documents and not older ones, I'd have
suspected a problem in the Normal.dot template (damage). But then you should
have seen a difference booting in Safe Mode...
