First, have you installed the French proofing tools from the
original Office 2000 CDs?

If not, you need to go over START/Settings/Control Panel/Add Remove
programs. Select the entry for Office, then choose to "Change" it.

Setup should run, and will probably want you to insert the CD. You
ought to get a dialog box where you can choose whether to add/remove
components, repair the installation or remove Office. You want the
option to add/remove components, and you want to customize the
setup.

this should get you to a "tree" kind of list. Look through the
general Office entries (like tools and shared) for the "Proofing
tools". under that you should be able to set French to "Run from my
computer".

You should also look for and install the Language settings tool.
