User has Outlook 2003. A 400mb PST file suddenly will not open.

When opening with File/Open Outlook Data File the error is "out of memory or
system resources. Close applications and try again".

When trying to copy the pst file to the network or the local drive, the
error is something like "Failed cyclic redundancy check." I did a chkdsk on
the drive; no help. SCANPST.EXE failed too.

Is there any way to recover this file?

Make sure the file is not marked read-only -- Outlook needs write access to
the file. Also, the cyclic redundancy check error usually occurs when a file
is coming from a bad CD/DVD and the file has been damaged. However, it's not
necessarily unfixable.

Try the different ideas on this page (it's not just about the scanpst.exe
file): http://www.slipstick.com/problems/scanpst.htm

Despite the good chkdsk result, this may still be a hardware error. Try
a full chkdsk with the /R option.

I used to have the similar problem, i know a useful tool!you can try a popular Outlook recovery tool called Advanced Outlook Repair to repair your PST file. It is a powerful tool to recover messages, folders and other objects from corrupt or damaged Microsoft Outlook PST files.

Detailed information about Advanced Outlook Repair can be found at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/

And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/aor.exe

The .pst file which you are trying to open might be corrupt. You can very well get back the email messages inside the .pst file by repairing the .pst file using a right tool.

You can use PST Repair Software to repair such corrupted .pst files.
