| I have a new laptop with Vista + Office 2007 (probably a bad move!) and I keep noticing a new icon at bottom right of screen "Outlook is synchronizing folders". Despite reading bits on various websites about this, I still can't understand if I can stop it happening. The problem with it is that it slows my PC down to a near halt when it's synchronising. Do I need it, what does it do? I only use my PC with one other user on a home network, I don't share any common files with other users. This is really annoying.

| do you have exchange, POP? how long does it try to synchronize? If it's exchange and you're running outlook for the first time, it may take some time before it totally synchronizes your data. Just let it run for some time and it should go away....

| I'm unsure if I have Exchange, how would I know? I use POP mail a lot and run outlook all the time. The synchronisation pops up at various times, can be running for 15 minutes or so, or just a few seconds. But it slows everything down. Maybe I just need to be patient, thanks for your help. |

| Since you have POP, it's simply trying to synchronize with your host which usually takes some time depending on the size of data. Perhaps there's latency connecting to your host server and it not uncommon. Since you have POP, it means you're not on exchange server. When you initially setup Outlook email, it asks you whether you have Exchange or POP. As a side note, Vista needs at least 2GB of RAM for optimal performance. |

| Thanks for the info. It's now clear to me. Guess I'll just have to suffer with Vista, like many. (I have 2Gb RAM but cannot add more to my Vaio laptop) Happy days! |

| You can go into Tools/Options/Other in Outlook and specify some of the settings regsrding auto-synchronization. |
