Using Outlook dialer with VOIP

I'm really surprised that there is so little information on this. All I can
find is a four-year-old thread, which is obviously out-of-date, links to
instructions for using the dialer with Skype and Vonage, and dozens of
technical articles on the integration of VOIP into the Office core code.

The fact that this is possible is demonstrated by the Vonage and Skype
instructions. But I have been completely unable to find any instructions for
setting up a system including telephone service provided by a cable internet
provider.

Has anyone got a clue about this? Am I just missing something so obvious no
one needs to discuss it?

It can be done. VOIPfone provide an "add-on" for Outlook which uses
the TAPI inteface to initiate a call via your internet link. When you
select the "Dial" option from within Outlook, the add-on sends a
request to VOIPfone across the internet, then a few seconds later, the
hand-set rings - pick it up and you are connected to the dialled line.

One the plus side, this saves you manually dialling. On the minus
side, the number does not get stored in the hand-sets "redial" list.

If you are not with VOIPfone then I think you would either need to
create your own version of this, or hope that your provider will do
it. I'm not aware of a generic version.

You need a TAPI driver that works with your voice over IP provider - the
best place to start is with their support site.
