After clicking on new message, if I click the To: button and select a name,
when send is clicked the message will hang in the outbox and will continue
until I delete it. A restart of outlook will not remove it. However if I hand
type the e-mail address in the To: field the e-mail will be sent. What am I
doing wrong. No errors are listed.

Thanks

No way for us to tell what you are doing wrong. That behavior suggests that
the electronic address you are entering is not valid. Examine the Contact
Record of the next recipient you enter and make sure it has a valid,
resolved address.

Russ,
All of the contacts have been used for over 5 years. I used the vista easy
transfer program to move all of my settings. I have worked through the issue
with contacts not showing up in the address book, MS KB Article ID : 287563
now I'm stuck on this. Is there a way after backing up my contacts to
completely delete all of the contacts and address books in Outlook 2007 and
start over?
Thanks

Vista's WET should not be used for Outlook. Do you still have your original
Outlook data file?

I have the same issue. I upgraded from Office Professional 2003 to Office Enterprise 2007. I can receive emails without issue, I can manually enter an email address to send "TO" and the email is sent fine. However when I select a "Contact" the email will sit in the outbox until I delete it. Now, to add another wrinkle! After I manually enter an email address of someone in my contacts, I can then click on the "contact" and the email will be sent. When using Outlook 2003 I was always able to send email to my contacts without issue. I have, to this point, found no help through Microsoft. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

This has been bugging the heck out of me since I installed Outlook 2007 on my new Dell Inspiron 9400 with Windows Vista Business. The way I got my contacts into my Outlook was through my Pocket PC and the new Windows Vista sync program which is already part of the system. It seemed to sync everything fine. My email address and contacts’ info appear to be in the right places. The problem is with the auto-generate feature (not sure if that is the name of the function). It's when you type a name in TO: field and tab out, a few seconds later below the name a red squiggly line appears. You right click that name and a drop down appears with a list of possible names and corresponding email matches. I then choose the match and it plugs that name and address in the TO: field just the way it did in Outlook 2003. Seems to work so far. The name and email then appears like this -> (I obviously changed the name for confidentiality) David Name(Dname@address.Com). If I double left click on the name/email address in the TO field, then the contact in Outlook opens, and again appears to be the valid contact with everything in proper place. Then I send the email. Then the crazy thing starts to happen; it gets stuck in the perpetual Outbox frenzy where it does a send/receive process 10's or 100's of times, I've seen 800+ times and my processor light is just revving constantly. Then I try to stop it by going to the outbox and double click the email but it says it cannot open because its being sent. So basically, I have to shut down Outlook to stop the process and restart and catch it before it tries to send/receive again. I then delete it from the outbox.

Here are some interesting clues I've gathered. One time I sent an email to two people, one with a fully typed out email and also to the auto-generated name. Again, stuck in the endless Outbox frenzy. The one person got it who’s email address I typed out. He replied to all. The email that he sent to both me and David then got bounced back to him because David’s email was wrong. That email appeared in my Outlook 2007 inbox TO: field looking like this -> "David Name (DName@Address.Com)"@alamode.com and then below in the reply text it appears that I had sent it to "David Name\(DName@Address.Com\)"; This is really strange because "@alamode.com” is my SMTP and POP3 server and has nothing to do with David's email address and in the reply area I had never typed that email with back slashes in that format and it yet it appeared to be correct from the auto-generate name just the way it was in Outlook 2003 when it worked. So then I check my web based email to see how it appears in my inbox there. Although the web based client's format doesn’t not show who else it was sent to, I does show in the reply text below who I send it to and that appears like it did in my inbox reply like this -> "David Name \(DName@Address.Com\)";

So please, does anyone know what's going on here? Hopefully this is a thorough enough explanation. I called Ala Mode and they're system is working fine and did great with Outlook 2003 and from their web based system. They say it's the email Client meaning Outlook 2007 that is producing the incorrect address or protocol or whatever. I really don't understand, but I sure hope someone knows what the cause is and if there is anything that I need to do to fix this bug. One thing I may try is import my other computers PST file. Maybe the Pocket PC sync of addresses caused the issue but it has always worked well with other computers with Outlook 2003 using Active Sync. Ugh! Thank you and hopefully an answer emerges!!

I have the same problem.

I did use wet to transfer my data. I already had to make a new profile to
see the contacts in the first place. Now after doing all that when I send
using a contact it continues to send ... endlessly. I have to stop the
process and restart Outlook. When I type in the same address, aposed to
selecting from contacts, the message sends fine. I have tried several
contacts. Is there a fix for the problem? I do have the original
outlook.pst file.

Thanks,

Cecil

I know this is late in coming, but my search of the Internet for a solution to the exact same problem landed me here. The problem is when an address is entered from the contact list, the email never leaves the Outbox. When the address is directly entered it does. Someone called me last night to solve the same problem and today I had to spend about an hour dealing with it. Here is what I found.

I created a new contact folder and addresses entered in that work fine. The problem was restricted to an existing contact folder. I tried the following and it worked at least for the time being. Export all your contacts to a DOS text file. Create a new contact folder and name it some like "corrupt contacts" and cut and paste all your contacts into it. You should now have an empty contact folder. Now import the contacts from the text file you earlier created. I didn't try exporting to a PST and that might have worked as well but I didn't have time to try it. The text file included the notes and I was impressed by that!

This bug is beginning to ruin my mental health. It is simply preposterous the way Outlook behaves. I'm running Outlook 2007 on a Vista machine. I'm having problems identical to kujo. (I even use Pocket PC to sync between two computers.) The exact same contact list on my Outlook 2003/Windows XP machine gives me no problems. The only workaround that works for me so far is what brkramer suggested, exporting to a .CSV file, deleting everything, then importing. I'm just afraid that something might get lost in translation, and I can't really manually verify 450+ contacts.

I really want to know why this happens. WHY? It makes no sense. Why should it work if the address is manually typed in, but not if it comes from the address book? Mad

I'm having a similar problem -- mail messages hang out forever in the Outbox
if I type in a contact's real name or try to send using a distribution list.
I'm running Office 2007 on Windows Vista Ultimate.

I did discover that in every case that this happened, there was a recipient
whose contact is "dirty" when opened. That is, I open the contact,
immediately close it, and get prompted to save. After doing this, I can send
to that contact without trouble.

I was hoping that the problem would be completely solved by just opening
every contact, closing it, and saving when prompted. Unfortunately I
synchronize my contacts with a Pocket PC, and the process of synchronization
appears to put many of my contacts back into this unsendable state (even
though the contacts didn't actually change on either platform).

My current work-around is:

1. Try to send email
2. Pay close attention as to whether it sends or not
3. If not, start wondering if Thunderbird can sync with PPC yet
4. Go through every recipient's contact, opening, closing, and saving if
prompted
5. Open the original message from the Outbox
6. Click send again

I'm short on love for Outlook at this point.

Did you import your contacts along the way?

Yes, I think I did. I had been using Outlook Express before I switched to
Vista. I can't remember exactly what process I used to move my contacts over,
though.

Do you have a solution based on that information, or were you just looking
for more commonalities?

The problem is that importing tends not to resolve the addresses, which
would explain the symptoms you see. I can't offer any suggestions other
than opening each and saving them again.

If it were just a one-time problem, that would be fine (in a
stupid-acceptance-of-an-egregious-Outlook-bug kind of way). I would just go
through all my contacts, open and save. In fact, I've done this.
Unfortunately, adding the Pocket PC sync to the mix seems to unresolve them
again.

I've never had that problem and I've synched by PPC with Outlook for years.

hi, i'm having the same issue, have you found a solution yet?
if not, something i've noticed is that i've just installed ZYXEL router to handle QOS and seems the issue only occurs when i'm downloading torrents. the router doesn't appear to be able to differentiate between torrents and mail. e.g. if i try to send a 7mb file with the torrents going i get trouble if the torrents aren't running the emails work fine. i didn't start having trouble until i installed the QOS.

I had the same problem and it drove me crazy until I fugured out the solution. If you check your Contact Address Book you will probably see that the contact names are there, but their email addresses are missing. That is why the emails never leave the outbox. When you type them in manually, it works. If you try to edit or delete the corrupt contacts, you will get an error message and nothing happens. Solution: Go to the main Outlook window and click on Contacts at the lower left side of page. You will see a list of blank contacts appear to the right. Delete the blanks from the list one at a time. When they are all gone, reconstruct your Contact list and everything should be back to normal. Remember, do not try to delete the corrupt contacts from the Address Book, because it won't work. Good luck!

That worked. Deleted my contacts folder after exporting them to a .csv file, and bam, worked like a charm!!! Thanks!!!

My machine also developed this problem after I created a new profile, due to contacts not showing when To button clicked, Distribution Lists not coming across and messages "sticking" in Outbox although they were sent. Suggestion to Dell and Microsoft - a large red sticker on new machines that says "DO NOT USE WINDOWS EASY TRANSFER FOR OUTLOOK".

I followed brkramer's suggestion and exported to CSV then blew away my contacts (keeping a copy in an archive folder in case of future problems) then imported them and yes it's working great. The only minor annoyance is that I use picture contacts and obviously I will have to manually reassign the photos to my contacts.

I am going to test my contacts by not synchronizing them with my Pocket PC for a week. If the problem occurs again after I've started synchronizing I will know it's either Outlook 2007 or Vista's "Windows Mobile Device Center & Sync Center", as the same (old) Pocket PC setup in Outlook 2003 on XP using ActiveSync works fine. In which case I'll post here with a followup.

It's been over a week since taking repair action and my Outlook installation is working fine.
(After following steps suggested earlier in this thread).
Before reintroducting my Pocket PC to my fixed up Outlook I ran a scan and repair on Outlook's main PST file (see here about scanpst.exe) and it found an unsurprisingly huge amount of errors, considering I've been using Outlook from 95 version through to 2007! This free tool included with Outlook should be publicized more IMHO.
Then I re-introduced the PocketPC synchronization and everything is still working fine.
Very Happy
Thank you Lockergnome posters!
