I just installed Office 2003 from a disk and cannot open Outlook. I get this
error message instead:

Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the wrong
version. This could have been caused by installing other messaging software.
Please reinstall Outlook.

Reinstallation does not help. All other Office programs work fine.

Any ideas anyone? Thanks!

Try renaming the MSMAPI32.DLL to MSMAPI32.XXX. Then try starting Outlook.

File is at \Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033 for english
systems.

Wow, that was easy. I didn't see this advice in other posts. Thank you. Have
a great day!

run fixmapi.exe - it's in one of the office folders or use search (use
advanced options for looking in hidden files and folders).

Hi - I tried that and nothing happens. Renaming the file as the previous
poster indicated worked, however. Thank you so much for responding!

I am getting the mapi32 error for Outlook 2003 in Vista. The fixmapi doesn't want to run and I am not allowed to change the name of the mapi32.dll file. I have uninstalled and reinstall a couple of times and one time I ran the installation as administrator. I AM GOING TO SCREAM! Any ideas? PPPPLLLLLEEEEAAASSEEE.

I have the same error, caused by installing, then uninstalling the OneNote
2007 trial. Now my outlook is totally unrunnable. Renaming msmapi32.dll
doesn't work at all for me -- just prompts me for an Office CD, which of
course doesn't exist since I got this Office preinstalled.
