I'm not sure how this happened, but every time I select text and click the "numbering"
button, I get a number, but the font changes to H1 and the other H1 style. (the H1 style
is numeric, and blue). In other words, clicking the numbering button (for a numeric
list) applies the H1 style.

I'm searching for the different styles, but everything seems linked to everything else,
and there are different numeric styles.

PLEASE - How do I clear this "numbering" style???

When you click on the Numbering button, you get the style of numbering you
last applied, which will (usually) correspond to the pane selected if you
open Format | Numbering. It's always preferable to use specifically defined
numbered styles, such as List Number, to apply numbering.

WTF does it take to just get a normal list??? I tried to reset the list styles, I've got
a very stable computer but resetting the list styles locked up Word 2002!

HELP!!!

How do I get to the List Number style, and is there a button defined for it?

Same way you get to any other style, depending on version. In Word 2000 and
earlier, you can open Format | Style directly. In Word 2002 and above, this
will open the Styles & Formatting task pane, which you may or may not be
able to persuade to display the List Number style by choosing "All styles."
In any version, however (Word 2007 excepted--I have no clue how it works),
you can press Shift while clicking the down arrow on the Style box to force
it to display the entire Styles list. Once you've used the style, it will be
in the (abbreviated) Style list and the Styles & Formatting task pane.

Note that if you are using outline numbering, you should follow the
instructions in
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html very
carefully.

I normally just use the toolbar buttons. I understand now what you are explaining.

Clicking on the numbering button gives me the last style of numbering I selected -
that's something I never knew...

Thanks.again!

My boss blames his inability to use the numbering and bullet styles
correctly on Bill Gates. He says that Bill messed it up. I told him he's
right - that the big guy is out to get him personally. Wink
