Archived from groups: microsoft>public>word>numbering (more info?)

I need some expert help. I'm running Word 2003 under Windows XP. In
response to an RFP, I'm told to number each response section starting
at 1 at the beginning of the section. I have done this successfully
and it displays in the lower right hand corner of the page in the
footer (for example: "Introduction Page 1 of 5"). In order to make
this work, I have had to insert the last number (total number of pages
in the section) as a constant. Is there any AUTOMATED way to provide
this function for the total number of pages in each section? I know
how to insert the total number of pages for the document, but not just
for the section.

IN ADDITION to maintaining this numbering scheme, I would like to have
a second numbering scheme that is a traditional "Page 1 of 75" type
for the document as a whole. Ideally, this would display just below
the first numbering scheme described above, in the lower right
footer. This requires having two page numbers associated with each
page - one for the numbering within the section and one for the
numbering within the document as a whole. Is this possible? I have
the ability to use Word 2007. Would this change the answer? Thank
you for any help you can offer. BobD.

DESIRED NUMBER FORMAT IN LOWER RIGHT FOOTER:

Section 3 - Page 3 of 5
Document - Page 17 of 75

You would use the field SectionPages, for this you will need section breaks
between your chapter breaks.
Also for your "Section 3" if this relates to the Heading 1 numbering, you
can use the StyleRef field which will automatically change as your chapters
change.
I have been answering RFPs for donkeys-years and have come across some very
strange requests, but usually it comes down to a poorly written RFP and the
client/consultant not explaining themselves very well - not a good start in
the RFP process Wink
Personally I would not have the "Page" in "Page 3 of 15", only the "3 of 15"
as I read once somewhere, "if the reader needs the word "page" to tell them
that this is the page number, then they should not be holding such as
dangerous item as a piece of paper!" Smile
Hope this helps and best of luck with the proposal.
