When I close down Word 2007, the message, "Microsoft Office Word has stopped
working" and then the message, "Microsoft Office Word trying to recover your
information" then "Microsoft Office Word restarting". I have to close the
program a 2nd time & get the same messages before the program shuts down.
What do I need to do to correct this issue?

I'm having the exact same problem. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Word, and then uninstalling and reinstalling Office. It didn't help. I still get this error every time I try to exit Word 2007. Anybody know how to fix?

The thing is... we don't know what "the exact same problem" is since this is
an original message thread not associated with any other. I see dozens and
dozens of messages, and I'd be hard-pressed to know which one you're
associating your problem with.

That said... exactly what error message are you getting when you close Word
2007?

Such problems usually have one of several causes:

1. Corrupted normal.dotm file.

2. Corrupted Data key in the registry.

3. An interfering add-in.

4. Corrupted Windows User profile.

5. A damaged installation.

Once we know what error you're seeing, we'll have a better idea of how to go
about solving the problem.

As an opening diagnostic... try opening Word in Safe Mode (press Ctrl when
launching Word, and click Yes to starting in Safe Mode). When you close Word
after starting in Safe Mode, does it close OK, or is there still the error?

I had this problem and found this fix on Microsoft's website.

1. Open up Regedit. (Go to Start and type "regedit" in the search field and press enter.)

2. In Regedit navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

3. Right mouse click on the "Data" folder and delete it.

4. Open up Word, close it, and voila, problem solved.

I am having the same problem. When I close the program, Word 2007stops working and then a box appears stating that it cannot open a file ~WRS{3C1E1BE8-E288-4A4B-9A0D-D8C86F88A62D}. This problem doesn't seem to affect the content of the files. I have repaired (from the CD), deleted and reinstalled, and deleted the DATA registry. Thanks. JLS Very Happy

Very Happy Very Happy This problem as plagued me since I started using Office 2007. This solution, slightly modified by merely changing the name of the folder to "xdata" seems to have solved the problem like magic. thanks

Which folder do I rename "xdata?" Is it every folder where I store .doc(x) files? I have it setup to save to the desktop. Then I relocate them to the appropriate destination. How did you discover the renaming (just curious)? Thanks. JLS

Oh, I simply always rename files and folders rather than deleting them so that I can recover them if what I do causes an error. Sorry I didn't notice that part of your question the first time around. Embarassed

I am getting the exact same error message when closing Visio and Word. I thought it was Visio, so I reinstalled the program, but get the same messages for both programs.
I followed the data deletion in the registry for Word and it seemed to solve the problem, but Visio still gives the error message.

The Visio problem mentioned later in this thread is likely due to a bluetooth COM add-in. See more details about how to fix on this forum:

Thanks for the help with this problem...the registry "fix" works for me for a few opening/closings of Office 2007, but then comes back. When it does, a check of my registry shows that the "data" entry has re-appeared. Any suggestions?

This is annoying...it seems that Microsoft would fix this. Dave

Check out this KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;937997

For me, the Visio COM Add-In that was apparently causing the problem was "Send to Bluetooth". After unchecking that item, the problem has disappeared.

REMINDER: Editing the registry can be risky for those unfamiliar. A backup should be made before any registry editing.

Hope this helps!

After researching, reading and testing several possible solutions to this error message, I finally found one that is satisfactory in my computer.
In my specific situation it is the driver of the hp 470 printer. If I setup that printer as default I will get the message, if I setup any other printer as defaul, I won't get it.

Extrapolating this situation, I might say that issues with "xxxxxxx stopped working" in an Office 2007/Vista environment are originated from incorrect drivers. If HP has not solved this PRINTER issue for months (with all the technical resources that they have), imagine what other hardware manufacturers deliver to the market.
My suggestion, try to upgrade your printer drivers or change default printers.

Very Happy Thank you very much for the help! I have been having trouble with shutting down and opening files with Office Word. I tried to uninstall/reinstall I even bought a new program!! It worked for a few days then the same troubles started again.

I did as Thom Stark (great directions! I found the file with ese) and greybeard said with changing the Data file to xData and instantly I was able to open my word files without any problems! Thank you both very much!! as this was making me very frustrated!!

I have MS office professional 2007. Everything is updated. I'm running on
Windows Vista Ultimate. It is also up to date. Yesterday word worked fine.
I tried an ad-in where I could publish to a web page last night. It said
something like "no web page is associated with this add-in" or something like
that. I had the choice to set one up, or do it later. I chose do it later or
skip or similar choice. Then I think my computer updated during the night.
I think trying to use the add-in to publish to webpage didn't have anything
to do with my current problem, but I don't know.

Today I can't move the cursor around in the document field when using the
mouse. I can move the curor using the up/down/left/right arrows. The mouse
does allow me to move between pull-down menus at the top, but it won't let me
scroll down on the scroll bar on the side of the page. WHEN I GO TO CLOSE
THE PROGRAM, I GET A MESSAGE saying MICROSOFT OFFICE HAS STOPPED WORKING. I
choose to search for a solution to the problem on line, but it doesn't work
or find a fix. HOW CAN I RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM? PLEASE AND THANKS.

I have ran the office diagnostics program and it didn't find anything
wrong. When I close the program I I have a little pull down menu to show
details with the "Microsoft Office has stopped working" splash screen, where
I get the following message:

When I click on the HKey...it will not let me delete and I do not see the
data folder. Please advise further. Thanks!

Whatever you do, don't try to delete the entire hive (HKEY_CURRENT_USER).
Only delete the specific key mentioned in this algorithm! Editing the
registry without knowing what you are doing can break your entire operating
system!

Anyway, I guess the advise was extracted from
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541

If you are not familiar with the registry, which I assume you aren't if you
tried to delete that entire key, try the guided help mentioned on the above
page.

I will use the "Thom Stark" suggested solution (below) and let you know if it doesn't work.
