I'm having a problem within Word 2000 where the language will change to
French from English UK. This can happen in a brand new document or from a
Template.

Have checked the language settings of the Template on another machine all ok

Machine running Windows XP, with all windows updates installed.

Start with the article on formatting in Word in the Tips section of my
website. Then come back with follow-up questions.

Have looked through the articles on formatting in Word.

The problem I have isn't to do with how to format but why will it change
within a document when you haven't asked it to.

This happens intermittently.

Word has been reinstall/repaired.

Thanks

the most common reason is that you've copied/pasted text from another
source (document or web page) that's formatted with a different language.

Second most common is that you have more than one keyboard language defined
in Windows, and that you're pressing the keyboard combination (Alt+Shift)
to cycle to the next language in that list.

With a blank document open, click on Tools > Language > Set Language. If the
box before "Detect language is automatically" has a check in it, remove it.
Pick the default language that you want. Click on Default > Yes > OK. Save
the blank document with a throw-away name and close it. Exit Word. If Word
tells you that changes have been made in normal.dot and asks if you want to
save them, click on Yes.

What's often happening in mysterious, intermittent language changes when
automatic language detection is turned on is
that Word thinks it's a better judge of what language is being used than the
user is. I've had Word claim that text was German, French, and on one
occasion Serbo-Croatian.
